Casual medieval historians rejoice! (That's those anywhere between being able to read original Latin documents in Europe and those fantasy gaming anything that looks like Lord of the Rings.) Oakeshott has provided the perfect vehicle whereby we can pass along our love for the knight in armor and on horseback (in his more accurate historical state) to the next one or two generations... while still enjoying an enjoyable quick read/review ourselves! I was very happy to complete my collection of Oakeshott's entire series on knights with my last purchases via Amazon!

Good Reference
This is a great reference for people who just want the basics on knights and castles. I gave it a 4 star because it really needed a bit more to it in terms of illustrations. Otherwise, very good and easy to understand, unlike a lot of works written by historians.

A good book
Book well written, informative without being boring. It has some beautiful drawings. It's a good start for those interested in the subject. There are not many pictures, so may not please if you expect to see them. Otherwise a good book.

Enjoyable
This book was very enjoyable for the enthusiast. I had hoped that there would be more illustrations on the subject, but the book was certainly entertaining and insightful.

super text for Castle basics!!
This version of the 1965 text has been revised and updated and a glossary added. A companion work (Dark Age Warrior and A Knight in Battle are the others in his triology) this one gives you the a to z basics of the knight and his castle. Loaded with all sorts of nifty details like why circular stars in castle ascend clockwise, why slaughtering a whole herd of pigs is essential to conquering a castle during a seige, to what castles were constructed of and how they were laid out.For people just beginning to get into medieval history, these are a MUST!! Rich in details. A handy help to writers as well.

Great addition to your library
This is a short, fun read. Lots of interesting bits. I have much of Oakeshott's work. Generally, his work is referencematerial that you will refer to again and again. He really does his research. I highly recommend this book, it's wellworth the price.
