Not as pictured but very good
This selection is just shaved biltong, it is dried and very good. If you're expecting the picture thats not what you will receive. I wasn't happy when I originally got it, but after trying it, I liked the shaved dried version of biltong. WITH THAT SAID, I called Braatime and they were extremely helpful. I received a package of delicious wet (still pink in the middle as pictured), seasoned Biltong with fat... Delicious. So. If you read other reviews on here just know that this is shaved biltong.... NOT BEEF JERKY. That's something completely different and you should appreciate the seasoned dried biltong for what it is. It's not salty or loaded down with flavorings, think natural beef with a little season. I made that general mistake at first. So... in conclusion, The seasoned dried is great! But the seasoned wet biltong is still my favorite! Try both

Dry, hard, flavorless :(
Technically, this is South African "biltong" based on the ingredients. It has the right flavor but only barely. They put minimal amounts of seasoning on - I'm used to more flavor. That would have been ok if it wasn't also very very dry and hard. So dry it's brittle. It's not tough. Just very dry like eating a biscuit or rusk! I prefer biltong that's usually soft and moist in the middle. And also the pieces aren't all nicely sliced against the grain substantial slices. There's a lot of crumbs and also a lot of strips that were cut with the grain. And finally, the packaging is not the one in the picture. Are they out of stock and sent something similar in its place, or did they change packaging, I would like to know. Either way, you're taking a risk that it's not what you expected. But lastly I will say that my mom really likes this biltong because she says she likes mild and low fat (and she had a recent bad experience with biltong that went off - this is so dry I don't think it will easily go off!).

Savory and simple
I love this product. I had a friend in high school who was a foreign exchange student. The first time he gave me a bit of Biltong, I was hooked. I love jerky, but most packaged products are very high in sodium, highly processed, and (in my opinion) overly seasoned. I prefer something that tastes more like meat than the flavoring added. I will warn you and agree with others that this product does have a vinegary taste to it. Um, duh. Vinegar is the third ingredient (out of five, by the way). That flavor was a bit unexpected, but I like vinegar so I got over it rather quickly. My only wish is that it was, ironically, a teeny bit more seasoned. I wouldn't mind a kick of spice. Having said that, this company does offer spicey varieties. In short: this is a meaty, simple, savory, mildly acidic snack. It is natural and straight-forward and delicious!

Best price/quantity ratio for ordering biltong in the USA
That's right, another South African living in the USA looking for some biltong at a reasonable price without resorting to building his own biltong box. I've tried quite a few different brands of biltong you can order online and if you are willing to spend the money, you can definitely get better stuff, but when it comes to price and quantity it is hard to beat this, especially since it uses prime shipping.I used to order my biltong from a site called Out of Africa Trading, they are located in Canada and have authentic imported South African goods, this means they have biltong that is made from Kudu and Springbok. If that is what you are used to, then it is hard to settle for beef. However, shipping from that site is kind of ridiculous, on occasion I will still buy a bunch of Ghost Pops from them and even though the bags are mostly air, it cost around $60 for 7 large bags. Biltong costs even more to ship because of the weight. In 2010 I went back to Africa to visit relatives, we spent a couple weeks in Namibia with my Uncle who has people come from all over the world to hunt big and small African game on his land. He also makes his own biltong and droewors out of the animals he and his boys have killed, that right there is the best biltong experience you can have and I highly recommend it if you get the chance. So if you are like me and have been scouring the net looking for the best deal on biltong in the USA, then I would at least give this a shot and see if you like it. Maybe don't order a huge quantity in case you don't like it. I see these reviews from people who said it tastes bad and you can tell those people did not grow up with biltong as part of their childhood. Most of them are American born people who thought they were buying a big fat slim-jim.Edit 11/7/14 - So I started purchasing from braaitime.com who are the suppliers for this Biltong and it is MUCH fresher than going through Amazon, plus they offer free shipping for 1lb or more of Biltong and you have WAY more options like how wet you want it and if you want solid chunks or sliced etc. I highly recommend going to their website and giving them a shot.

Better than Expected
I never write reviews. This is my first and may be my only review. I was so pleased with this product I felt compelled to share as I was hesitant to buy such a product online. I own cattle and make my own jerky for my family. I purchased this product to see if biltong was worth the effort. If my attempt results in as good a product as Braaitime's biltong, then it is worth it. Given an approximate 50% shrinkage, this biltong is worth the price. I also like the fact that it doesn't contain additives and preservatives you find in most jerkies. I have included this biltong rehydrated in soups for camping and loved it. More importantly, it passed my boys taste tests with flying colors.
