Best 1970s Western
Where do I start? This film is beautiful, and Peckinpah'smost lyrical piece of work. This is the story of Billy the Kid, post, the Lincoln CountyWar, and the events leading to his death. There are manyversions of this story, but this one has to be the best. Asany western, it tells its own tale of historical facts, butit has never been told with such beauty.I am a big Peckinpah fan, but never took time to watchthis again. I am trying to binge watch all of his moviesover the next few weeks, and I will review them. But Ihave to say, this has to be his masterpiece. All his themesand tropes are here. The pasting of time, stoic men, andnasty kids are all part of Peckinpah's world, but only thismovie is it done with such lyrical style and pace. A truewestern classic

Times have changed........
"Times have changed" . What ever time you're in - times have changed .Younger you to the older you . So , firstly - warning - the chicken shoot-up scene is hard to stomach - it looks real but then "Apocalypse now" has it's horrors - as Pat says "Times have changed" I thought I knew this film - all mixed in my youth when the world was young , amidst the heady days of the 70's - & I had a view of it there in the"Times have changed" What ever times you're in - times have changed . Young you to old you . Half remembered it hovered in theshadow of "The Wild Bunch" - the ONLY western in my blu-ray collection .But recently I happened to find some stuff on Utube as I hunted down new threads in my long love of film & realised my decades old view was out of kilter . So - with other reviews in mind I bought this two disc special edition & watched the "Preview" version - near as we can get to the directors intension I gather . And as the end credits roll I wonder if I'd EVER actually seen this film before ! So much felt new ! I'm not reviewing any particular scene as good or bad as we will all have our own opinion. It a rough cut.(the chicken shootup scene is hard to stomach , but "Apocalypse Now " has it's horrors ) Some say it's slow - for me each character felt like a slow rolled cigarette & a glass of mature bourbon savoured . So many well known faces in a landscape well rode with the "Wild Bunch" - men out of time in a changing world . People I await the Blu-ray of the "Preview" or better!the definitive Blu-ray people , & it will join the "Bunch" as a companion piece on my shelf.

Best Western Ever Made
Sam Peckinpah's visionary western is arguably the best western ever made. The only other westerns that rival it are The Wild Bunch and Once Upon A Time In The West. Peckinpah's original directors cut was severed by MGM so that all that was left was the gunfights with a little exposition. The poetic qualities of the film Peckinpah wanted to be remembered by were lost. The film has recently been re-edited and re-released, as Peckinpah wanted it to be.Pat Garret (James Coburn) and Billy The Kid (Kris Kristofferson) were once friends. Over time they went their separate ways. Garret became a sheriff and Billy stayed an outlaw.Garret, as the law, feels it is his duty to hunt down his once friend, and send him to the gallows. So, the film is about the hunter and the hunted. Garret is a symbol of the civilised man who must kill Billy (The wild man) to rid himself of the wild man within himself. Something the old west had to eradicate from its psyche.Bob Dylan does the soundtrack and has a role in the film as one of Billy's men. It is great to witness him in a film even if it is a minor role. The soundtrack is superb. Dylan wrote Knocking On Heavens Door Especially for this. When two artists such as Dylan and Peckinpah come together, it is inevitable that the sparks of creativity shall fly.Pat Garret And Billy The Kid is a poem for all westerns, an odyssey of the old west that that is as powerful as it is mournful.

Still not right, but a must have!
I was eagerly awaiting this version having first seen this film back in the seventies and then seen a vhs version of the turner cut. I have given it five stars simply because it is Peckinpah's finest work. But in truth I was disappointed because I feel his 'cut' is still to be seen. It was great to get the scene of garret with his wife and dylans vocals over pickens death in the new cut but they should never have cut peckinpah's turn as the coffin maker. The beautifully elegiac melancholy is punctuated by Peckinpah stating he will take all he owns and bury it and never visit this country again. He never did make a western again. It is also right that the film finishes self-reflexively inverting the ending of Shane, with Garret hounded out by a boy throwing stones. But how could you leave out Poe's beating of the old man (ironically the guy who played 'Stonewall'-Elisha Cook Jnr- in Shane who was shot by the sadly missed Jack Palance as Wilson)A multi-layered Masterpiece for all cineastes. But will we ever see it as Peckinpah intended? Probably only if Roger Spottiswoode is allowed to re-edit without interference. Here's hoping. But until that happens get this double disc and half the fun is deciding how you'd edit it!

Classic Peckinpah
I haven't watched this in twenty years. Slo-mo violence, memorable performances from Kristofferson and Coburn, Dylan trying to be enigmatic but provided a brilliant soundtrack.
