The Sanctuary
I had seen the cover of this book many times when looking at books online or while shopping at stores. The more I ran across the novel, The Sanctuary, with the cover depicting bolted iron doors, the more I knew I just had to open the book. Over the course of reading many different novels and authors, with each one uniquely gifted to tell a story, this author has become a favorite of mine. There are probably some who don't care for this author or his books. Yet, one aspect of his writing that seems to glow above all others is the way he writes about God and mankind in a story that keeps the reader turning pages long into the night. I can't reveal too much in the way of themes as they play an integral role in the plot and might give away the ending. What I can tell you is the depth of the story and that what a reader can learn from it is deep, maybe even thought provoking. We are introduced to the penal system in the state of California. The name of the place is Basal and only certain men inhabit the place. In fact, to live there is by invitation only or is it by design? The warden has his own version of bringing about change within a man. In fact, his mission is to break their spirits. The prison is shaped like a cross with each wing having its' own purpose. No one may say or do anything without the warden's permission. The inmates sign a paper giving over...Two people long for love, yet each has secrets that have imprisoned them. They work hard to forget the past and to change. Renee looks at Daniel with love because without him she feels life isn't worth living. Daniel has a history of heartache, trauma, and violence; however, he now refuses to be violent. The Sanctuary is another wonderful masterpiece that draws the reader into the story and before long time is spent lost in the mystery. Surrounding the characters is a world all unto itself, separate from reality. Yet, someone is pulling strings to organize people into a situation that looks deadly. It is hard to write a review without giving away too much. I have read many of Ted Dekker's books over time, so many, in fact, I have lost count. The only thing I can say is I am never disappointed when I read his stories. Get a copy of the novel, a Coke, a snack and a blanket before you start this one because you won't want to stop reading even for a minute! I read The Sanctuary in a short amount of time and experienced the joy of being able to read another fantastic and thought-provoking tale by Ted Dekker.

Don't read this book.
While the book was well written, it is not a healthy read for anyone. It is full of violence, sadism, hatred, for the sake of nothing. There is no resolution, no truth to learn, although the author mentions in his comments concerning prison reform. To my fellow Christian readers, this is is not a godly book - don't know why it was offered on Faithful Reads. I bought it because I recognized Dekker' name. I'll not buy another of his books.

Consider reading The Priest's Graveyard before this one...
Let me start off by clarifying that this is a sequel to The Priest's Graveyard. In it, you'll read how and why Danny ends up in prison. This book wasn't really listed as part of a series, but I think it's nice to know these things ahead of time.Danny has been transferred to a "special" prison called Basal. In it, the inmates are called members and the warden is God. Any slight infraction is dealt with swiftly and with great force. The warden has made his own little sanctuary, but it's anything but for its prisoners. He's also determined to break Danny by any means necessary, even through the suffering of others.Renee is also dealing with her own version of hell. When a severed finger is delivered and a threat made to Danny's life, she knows she will sacrifice anything to get to Danny. He saved her, so she will save him. Enlisting the help of a former sheriff, she plays the game of a man she names "Sicko." He asks her to do the impossible or Danny is dead. This book is dark and disturbing. The things both Danny and Renee have to endure are not a Saturday walk in the park. Danny's tortures are horrifying. I got wrapped up in wanting to see what would happen. There seemed to be no possible way for the end to resolve to my liking, but I wasn't disappointed. In theory, you could read this without reading The Priest's Graveyard. There's enough details from Danny's past to make this a complete story on its own, but I think you'd understand Danny and Renee's characters much more fully if you read that one first. The truths at the end about how everyone has their own prison had me tearing up.For the subject matter and the darkness of the writing I give it 4 stars. For the profound truths and excellent storytelling, it's easily a 5 star book. Just be warned that the darkness is there, but the light will push it back in the end as it always does.

Dekker is brilliant
I picked up Dekker's first book in this series, The Priest's Graveyard, a gripping tale about a vigilante Priest, from B & N (sorry Amazon) The Priest's Graveyard whilst on holiday in the U.S. It was a truly gripping story so before you read this follow up, which is truly just as gripping, get The Priest's Graveyard and get your teeth into that first. This follow up concerns the same Priest who has admitted to a small number of his crimes in order to protect the love of his life. He is placed in the penal system and then transferred to an innovative prison where the Governor is more bent than the inmates. I won't spoil it for you. Trust me both books are well worth the read. Einfach Spannend
