Alex Hunter biological sci-fi horror thriller scores again
Greig Beick's third in the Alex Hunter military sci-fi/horror series, "This Green Hell", is another winner. It shares with the first two ("Beneath the Dark Ice" and "Dark Rising") a great plot, interesting characters (including the return of Aimee Weir, Alex's love interest from Beneath the Dark Ice), excellent research and writing, and lightning-fast pacing. Oh yes, and of course, our super(enhanced) hero, Alex Hunter. This time around paleobiologist Dr. Aimee Weir is deep in the jungles of Paraguay drilling down into an ancient gas bed for a microbe that could help convert hydrocarbons into fuel, when a problem arises. Aimee finds her bug, but it turns out to be more than she bargained for.... by a lot. Things go rapidly downhill from there. A team of Green Berets and some CDC reps are sent in to help protect Aimee and her team of scientists and the native workers disappears, and are found ripped to bloody shreds in the jungle by an unknown beast. Time to call for more help.Alex and his team of HAWCs (Hot-zone All-Forces Warfare Commandos - think super A-team Black Ops SEALs and you'll be close) don't show up until about 25% of the way in, but they arrive just in time to find a horrifying plague and an enemy that can match Alex in terms of strength, speed and cunning. Both foes dominate the rest of the novel.Again, not to be confused with great literature, but the verisimilitude, both biological, military , is about as good as it gets in this genre, and the plot is highly original. As with the previous two entries in the series, Beck wastes no space and fits a lot into roughly 300 pages. It is a very quick, fun and satisfying read (I did notice a fair number of typos, missing words and other minor errors scattered throughout that I do not recall from the earlier books but they were really not much of a distraction) and I will be eagerly awaiting the next in the series. I have already pre-ordered the "prequel", (Arcadian Genesis) in which we learn exactly how Alex got shot in the head and turned into the super-soldier that we met in Beneath the Dark Ice.Incidentally, one doesn't have to have read the previous books in the series for full enjoyment (But I predict that you will if you read this one). All the Alex Hunter novels are pretty much stand-alone, something of a rarity these days when multi-sequel character-driven series have become so common as to be expected.Recommended.J.M. Tepperp.s. After finishing the sequel, "Black Mountain" (that begins immediately after the end of This Green Hell), I can say, spoiler free, that more of the origins, and the fate of the Arcadian is revealed. But that's all I can say. You're just gonna have to read it to find out just how much of his origins and ultimate fate are disclosed. Beck has got me hooked, that's for sure.

Monstrosity!
“Hell is not hot, or cold.Nor is it deep below ground, or somewhere in the sky.Instead it is a place on Earth, filled with sucking bugs, disfiguring diseases and millions of tiny flesh-eating creatures.Hell is a jungle, and it is monstrously green.”Alex Hunter and The HAWCS, are sent to the jungles of Peru to determine what has happened to the Green Berets. The GB were sent there to protect the workers of a crew of oil and gas drillers, who have been mysteriously disappearing. The GB are brutally murdered and nobody knows how or why.So when Alex discovers that his old friend Amy Weir is part of the research team located there, he doesn’t hesitate to leave. But death is waiting for him. Death and disease. And an unknown abomination, that is older than the Earth.Whatever can be done? The author’s use of historical sources and scientific information, and especially horror, helps to make this my favorite episode by far.Fantastic five stars ✨

This Great Action Book
Greig Beck's 3rd novel in the Arcadian series is a solid one, but not as good as the first two books.Although extremely well written and exciting, there just didn't seem to have enough of the main character in it. I really like this series, and think it stands above many others of its genre, due to its solid characterization of its main character, Alex Hunter. And the reuniting of him with his love interest in the 1st book made for solid drama, which is blended in extremely well with the action and adventure. And the ending was not anything like what I expected! Beck is a master with just 3 books in the thriller/action-adventure genre, rivaling those Best-Selling authors such as James Rollins. I am truly surprised with his level of writing that he isn't being published by some big publishing firm. He's one of the best writers of this genre I've ever read in 35-plus-years.Even though I personally think this one is the weakest of the three books currently out, it still stands way above most I come across and try in this genre. Beck's research in several areas from history to science seems and reads very authentic, which allows him to pen some sci-fi fun in there to create a monster out of sheerest nightmare. And although this latest alien threat is extremely interesting and dangerous, therein sometimes became the problem for me in this novel. The monster came across as nearly indestructible and impossible for even Alex Hunter and his merry band of HAWCs can even stop. I was hoping for more action from other enemies in this book, as in the last book, which had Hunter battling an alien from another world as well as numerous bad-ass human enemies. I truly missed that here. But, overall, This Green Hell is well worth reading if you like this genre. Beck has a great writing aspect that keeps the pace and numerous characters interesting. Sometimes there was a bit too much science explaining for me, and not enough Hunter action, but that doesn't mean I cannot wait for the next installment.Especially in the mouth-watering way that Beck ended this book. What a cliff-hanger!Keep up the fantastic work, Mr. Beck!

Fast paced and an easy read
The third installment of the Alex Hunter/Arcadian series and not the best so far. The story moves quickly and keeps the interest up but the basic premise just has too many holes in it to make it a 5 star review. I have cautioned with my other Aklex Hunter reviews that you must suspend your disbelief. However, with this book, you really have to take your disbelief and send it away on a holiday for the duration.Alex Hunter leads a team to find out what is going on in the jungles of Paraguay. His friend id in danger thare and the Green Beret team send down for security have all disappeared. A contagion is let loose after some deep core oil drilling but this contagion is sentient (on second thoughts, send you disbelief to stay with relatives and don't answer the phone to it until you are finished).Even with the flaws in the the premise around the contagion (and why some but not all of the actors catch this), the story is well written and a very easy read. Still well recommended as a series to invest your time in.

Another bestseller from Greig Beck.
If you like science with adventure, this is the book for you. Third book in the series and Alex has moved on until an old friend is in trouble. Nothing will stop him from getting to her, his internal fight with his rage has not improved ...Will be control it or does it control him. Definite page turner...looking forward to reading next in series

The Arcadian! I love these books!
Narrator is great, really! Bins are well written and keep you listening. Some may think they are just derivative horror/sci-fi but they really do deal with some more complex issues. I love them for ensuring that they are. Easy to listen to and well written. I am collecting the whole series on audible. I would recommend Greig Beck, not just for this series but other books too. Not forgetting the narrator, he really makes these for me.

Rip roaring adventure.
You know what you are getting with the jack Hunter books and this doesn't fail. Action adventure, the jungles of the Amazon and terrifying monsters. Good bedtime reading? I have the entire Jack Hunter series so you can understand why I give it a high score. It is though a light quick read and it doesn't stand up to my best authors for quality and depth of entertainment
