Fantastic Home Education Resource! Muchas Gracias!
We recently moved to the treasure valley in Idaho (near Boise). Our boys, 10, 8, 6 & 3 have been educated at home (homeschool) and have done very well in their subjects. However, there was one significant lack in our program-- a second language! In this valley, there are many hispanics. We hear Spanish spoken virtually every time we leave our home to shop, attend church, athletic activities etc.. If not Spanish, we often hear “Spanglish”!My husband took 4 years of Spanish in High school and has spent some time in South America. I have many Spanish-speaking friends I attended school with and have been to Mexico & Spain. However, I took French in school and have really struggled when thinking of how to teach my boys a language I am so limited in.Looking on Amazon, I found *** and thought we would give it a try. Since our home education is based primarily on books and hands-on activities, the boys always get excited when it’s time to use a DVD. I mention this because we do not have cable/network television and they do not spend their time mindlessly watching screens. This may be a factor in their success. After the first lesson, they had learned a few words. We have been watching, reviewing & doing flash cards etc. for 6 weeks now and they are frequently using Spanish phrases and words. Here is some evidence:Our 3 year old came into the kitchen where my husband and I were talking. He opened a cupboard, didn’t find what he wanted & said, “there are no cups.” He turned around and enthusiastically asked, “Donde esta?”My sister, who teaches 4th grade, was chatting with us the other day. She was about to leave and asked the boys, do you want to learn a cool Spanish phrase? Of course, the boys said, “Yes!”. She had their attention and said, “Si puedo!” I was standing there, thinking that I hoped they were paying attention and asked them to repeat the words after her. My 10 year old had a look on his face like he was thinking and said, “I can do it.” My husband was shocked that he could translate a phrase he had neither heard nor learned previously, as was I!The boys were in a children’s meeting when a Spanish speaking boy & his mother came in and sat behind them. The boy was a little young--maybe 6--and having a hard time listening. He repeatedly asked his mother, “Que?” and a few other things. My sons said that they thought it was super fun to be able to understand what they were talking about, instead of being clueless. At a campout last week, our 8 year old was sitting around with a Spanish-speaking friend. He mentioned the DVDs and the friend started quizzing him. It turned into a game of saying a Spanish word and my son would say the English word. He thinks that he translated about 40 words.I would highly recommend these DVDs to any family that is willing to put forth the simple effort of watching them 5 or so times per week & following the outline for the additional activities. The songs are fun & we keep the CD in our car to review them. Definitely worth the purchase. One needs to keep in mind that this is a tool and once used well, should be added to with other quality resources. We’re going on two months with this and the boys do not feel that they have by any means exhausted it.

Loving the full immersion!
Having dedicated my life to being a Spanish teacher, I've never been a big believer in programs that promise to teach your child a new language by simply plopping them down in front of a TV screen. However, after seeing Kid Start Spanish in action, I must say that I'm a believer (can't help but to think of Shrek movie when I say that :) ).I think one of the important factors that this program brings to the table is the ability to immerse children into a completely Spanish environment. With this program DVDs are just a small part of the equation, the program also include books, games, flashcards, apps, and mobile video. This full immersion environment combined with the friendliness and warmth of home learning (shown to be superior to classroom learning) provides a surprisingly effective means to teach a language.I've seen first hand the rapid language development in children using Kid Start Spanish. One of the toughest obstacles to overcome in teaching a child Spanish is usually getting them to Speak the language rather just listen and understand (Latin parents here in the US know exactly what I'm saying). Kid Start Spanish seems to create a nice little environment where kids start to feel free to speak and use their newly acquired language. I believe this model could be used to teach any number of things. But I can't imagine a better way to boost your child's development long-term than teaching them a new language. Even being a teacher I must admit there is always down time and times where I don't get to spend as much quality time with my child as I should. One of my parents uses it strictly during car rides, and I've seen her child start to enjoy and practice using the language from just using it during the morning and afternoon car rides. Another one of my moms tells me that her son is now teaching her Spanish. It really does what it says.I hope that they develop something similar for English as there are many parents I know in Latin America who would very interested in using the Kid Start Spanish "immersion" system for teaching English as well. Ciao!Pros:Multiple ways to learnquick, easy lessonsrepetition, repetitionFun for kidsCons:not available in more languages
