I always sleep with a fan but after mine broke I decided to investigate white noise machines. Compared to a basic fan, the pitch or frequency of this device hurts my ears, even though it is fairly quiet. After 4 hours of the first night it developed a faint rattling or flapping noise which I could not get out of my head. After two sleepless nights I am returning the device and buying another fan.
