If you look at Chevy and GM trucks from 99-2005ish it seems there is an obvious flaw in the tailgate handle hardware. I see them all over the place with the bezel removed so the gate can be opened by pulling on the latch lever after the plastic clips break. Mine has been this way for 5 years and was also getting harder to work so I found this replacement part and now it works like butter! The part fit perfectly and was easy to install. Quality seems on par with original if not better. Cost was reasonable. I wish hi had done this sooner! In fairness I also decided to replace rusted out hinges and old latch hitches at the same time. All in the fixes were about $100! Not bad to have the tailgate working like new again!

I watched a Youtube video before installing the new tailgate latch. I actually had less trouble removing the old latch and installing the new one than the guy in the video. I highly recommend watching a how-to video if you haven’t done this before. A flathead screwdriver and a 13 millimeter socket or wrench are all the tools you will need. Pry the top of the bezel out with the flathead and then pull up to remove the old bezel. With the bezel out, push the outside of the red and green tabs down and pop the connecting rods out of their sockets. Next, reach in or use your screwdriver to pull the rod on the left (the red side) to the right. This will release the tailgate. With the tailgate down remove the 3 bolts holding the latch in and remove the latch. Put the new latch in and align the holes in the latch with the holes in the back of the tailgate. Replace the bolts and tighten them down all the way. Put the tailgate back up let it snap back in place to hold it up. Now reach in and move the green tab until it’s hole lines up with the end of the right side rod. Push the end of the rod into the tab’s hole and push the other end of the tab up until it locks into place. Repeat with the left side rod and clip. Your latch should now be fully functional. Finally, install the new bezel by placing the bottom fixed tabs in first. DO NOT put the top clips in first. You will break the bottom fixed tabs and ruin the bezel. It took about 15 minutes to install on my 02 Sierra. The quality and look of the new latch and bezel seem to be equal or better than the oem. Good value for the money.

Broke the tailgate handle on my 04 Chevy Silverado Saturday morning. Ordered this on Amazon later on Saturday and it arrived Monday. Installed the unit later that day. The only difficulty is connecting the cable from the handle to the tailgate latches. The cable/wire bends and fits into small holes on the handle and then locks in place with small plastic clips. Once the cable is in the holes, it fits so snuggly that it won't come out easily. This is a good thing. However, getting the cable into the holes is a bit tricky as it's a very tight fit. Caution and patience is required to slowly get the wires wedged in without breaking the plastic of the handle. Once in, the rest is fairly simple. The tailgate handle works and looks great!
