Frost and Flame

4-stars: 'Frost and Flame' by Gena Showalter
Frost and Flame is the second book to Gena Showalter’s Gods of War series, and readers are taken back to the All War battle on Terra, but this time with different characters. Gena starts the book introducing Bane and what happened to him in the past and how he became one of the combatants to battle in the All War. Bane is all about revenge in his story for his evil Queen killing his wife. His Queen is my new enemy in the series because of not only what she did to Bane, but what she order him to do on Earth. He is supposed to do his Queen’s bidding on Terra, but refuses to and instead searches out another princess like his Queen that was born on Earth. (This is something that is against the rules.) If you read Shadow and Ice, you would’ve found out that all the warriors were caught in ice due to a mortal named Erik that killed one of the warriors and became an immortal. Bane is trapped in the ice, but he recognizes one of the females that stumbles upon the ice cave, and he will do anything to get to her. Nola Lee is on vacation with her sister, but they end up on their own due to their guide leaving them. Nola has had dreams about a Golden God for several years now and finally finds him in an ice cavern. She thinks it’s still a dream, though, until the warriors are out of the ice and battling each other. She’s whisked away not by the Golden God, but another warrior named Zion. He’s all about protecting her. Bane though wants to find her and protect her too, especially since she’ll be the next royal. He needs to get her through the Blood Rite first and convince her to kill his Queen.Enough of explaining the book because I don’t want to give anything away for readers who are still wanting to read the second book in the series. This book brings me back to the battle of All War, and I loved getting to read Bane’s and Nola’s POV now. Gena has the same timeline from the first book in the second book, but instead of being with Knox and Vale, readers are following Bane and Nola. You’ll also have Zion in this book, but not his POV. I loved getting their POVs of the same battles that were in the first book, but it was predictable at specific parts of the book. There was also the swift ending at the end of the book, which left me wanting more because someone should’ve had a slower death than what happened at the end.The characters kept me interested in the story, though, even though I felt like I had read a similar story in the first book because of where the characters were in their book. Nola is a sassy, feisty young woman who may be suffering from lupus and fibromyalgia, but she won’t let her illnesses affect her strength to fight back when she needs to fight back. There’s also Bane who is all about revenge in this story, and we will get to have moments with his beast inside of him that is strong and protective. His dragon in the book was named Drago thanks to Nola in the story. I loved these two characters that were opposites of each other. Nola put Bane in his place, and Bane would put Nola in her place. There was a little bit more steaminess in this book compared to the first book too. One scene involved an RV and some rocking of the RV.If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, then you will get some of that show mentioned in this book. I loved it. (Even though the ending of GoT still has me mad.) This book ends up better than GoT’s ending though. 🙂Now I’m anxiously waiting for the next book because I want to know which warrior gets his/her book in the series. I’m hoping it’s Zion because readers will get to know him better in this book.Story Rating: 4 starsSteaminess Rating: 3.5 starsStandalone or part of series: Part of series. I would recommend reading in order since the 2nd book is with different characters, but at the same time as the first book.Do I recommend this book? Yes.Will I read other books from the author? Such a great story!
This book was even better than the first book. Nola and Bane and Zion were quite the trio.It was weird seeing the story that we saw in the first book unfold from another point of view.I thought Bane was a jerk at first because Nola was so sweet and positive despite all of her health challenges. I loved her spirit and strength.I see it has been a few years since this book has been written so I don't think this series will have more books or not but I will read them if it does continue.

Didn't want it to end!
This series is my new obsession! Frost and Flame is the second book in Gena's all new God's of War series. This book was just as epic as the first, Shadow and Ice! Non stop action, romance and revenge. I highly recommend reading this book but strongly suggest you read the books in order as they are written during the same time frame. We met Bane and Nola during Knox and Vale's story(Shadow and Ice) catching only glimpses of their time together that left us begging for more. For everything and Gena delivered!Their story starts off by giving us the background on Bane's heartbreaking past and subsequent reason for being a combatant in the all war. Bane is a fierce warrior with a literal beast living inside him that no one can control, not even him. Both him and beast live only for revenge against the ones they hate most. No one and nothing will stand in their way to achieve it.Chapter one starts off where we first met Knox, Vale and Nola in the last book. We finally get to see what was happening behind the scenes with Nola and her boys that we only caught glimpses of yet desperately wanted to know about!Nola with her own traumatic past she's trying to forget, has lived with unimaginable pain her entire life thanks to lupus and fibromyalgia. She is an opioid addict just trying to manage some of her pain, survive and make a life with her foster sister Vale. She's a very unique choice for a heroine and one I think so many can relate to. Her character teaches us there's no concrete definition to the meaning strong or warrior. That when you're willing but your body is unable to fight it sometimes leaves only your heart and mind as weapons which can be every bit, if not more, effective in battle. Sometimes that's the best show of strength there is.Their book takes us on a fast paced, action and romance packed journey where we learn there's always a way to overcome any obstacle. Even if it's not the way we imagined. That we need to let go of the past and look forward to the future. We get a few interactions with the mysterious Zion, who's book I'm thinking will be next, yet leaves us wanting more, with need for answers now! Gena has created so many new and wonderful characters that even as I hunger for Zion's story I'm craving all the others secrets as well! I'm beyond interested in the majority of them that I'll be ecstatic to read whoever she writes about next! They're just all so intriguing, even the ones most would consider enemies or villians, that I just want to crawl into this world and not come out until I've gotten to know each and every character fully!

Eh, it was ok
Definitely not as good as the first book in the Gods of War series. Too much focus on the secondary plot and male. I could care less about him. Portal him somewhere please. Too much time spent with the main character’s flip flopping feelings - or straight out denial of their feelings. Just get real. And many annoying & barely revealing flashbacks, repetitive flashbacks, partial visions, and confusing time travel scenarios. I was ready to throw the book across the room. The humor and snarky attitude of the heroine in the novel is the only thing that saved it, but even she was borderline extra at times. I don’t know if I could hang with her without taking some of her pills too, cause she gets whiny, annoying and makes stupid decisions.

Continueing a great new series
I've read all of the Lords of the Underworld books and have never been disappointed in the overall story of the book but sometimes the theme running through the story becomes a little flat. So yay new theme still great reads, although I like to switch the genre of books I read romance is my thing and although its a little tame in Miss Showalters books it never takes away from the growing romance. In my mind this new series is a keeper just waiting to see who's book is next is Zion a little to obvious?

Frost and Flame
Great follow up to book one. I really enjoyed Nola and Bane's story. The way it linked in to the previous story gave a good sense of the timing events weaving the two plots together. There are clever twists here that make Bane and Nola's battle unique, and they are such endearing characters, you want them to get their happily ever after. Its always better to be a coffee bean! (Read the book and you'll understand!)

Terribly written
As a huge fan of fantasy I found this book just horrendous. Terribly written with ridiculous characters (don't expect a kick ass heroine), pace just awful and frankly not worth reading. I really need to stop buying her books as the last few I've read from Gena Showalter have been terrible. I'll stick with Illona Andrews or one or Sarah J Maas for a real story written well.
