What you need to know about this Black Gravel
1. prepare to clean it. - grab 2 big buckets ( or a Tesco bag for life and a bucket) , dump the gravel into the bucket - place near a running water source, and grab a hand held sieve. Fill sieve with some gravel, and run under water (using your hand to spray the water for even coverage). Do it for about 15 sec. Decant gravel into bag, or another bucket. PUT KETTLE ON, TAKE A BREAK, WRITE A REVIEW> repeat.2. gravel will be the above image colour in the tank. I added a white sheet for reference for everybody different screen colour. Its not the midnight black that you think it might be. Light on aquarium is daylight balanced for plants.Overall, I suspected it might need rinsing and cleaning. The gravel itself is not round, rather angular. So consideration is needed if you have fish or invertebrate that crawl around on it. Its not razor sharp, but its not smooth either.ABOVE IS IMAGE FOR SHAPE AND A ADDED PENCIL TIP FOR SIZE REFERENCE, on a white sheet.NOTE>>>it looks BLACKER outside of aquarium!I gave it 4 stars, as it is what I required.

Looks great, just make sure you properly wash it!
Ordered this as I needed an inert substrate where I wouldn't have to worry about the parameters as much. This was reasonably priced and just what I needed for my plants as well.First time setting up a sand tank so I followed the advise to wash the sand. Ordered 20kg for my 125l tank which has given me a 4-5cm layer throughout. I read somewhere on here that it was recommended to wash this only once.... DEFINITELY NOT. I had to wash this sand alot! Rinsed each 10kg bag in a large bucket, filling it with water, stirring and then draining.... 10 times. Even after the 10th rinse it wasnt clear but was alot better than if I only washed it once.In the tank it looks amazing, it seems to hold down plants alot better than fluval stratum which i have also used previously. There are no fertilisers/nutrients in this but those can be added. Free clay balls were also provided so that was nice. The water is still a little cloudy but hopefully this clears in a few days. The fish seem to like it, don't have any bottom dwellers but my rainbow shark looks alot happier. Can't fault it so far, as expected. Hope it is really good for the plants I will be adding in the next few days.

Black Water.
Very dirty, ran black for a long time while cleaning. Not a great experience, but I use it dry and it became grey in colour. So pleased I wasn't dumping it into an aquarium

nice and white
I would rinse this one in a bucket before use. if you have a good filter you should be fine.nice and white and the quantity bough was more than enough for a 4ft tank
