excellect value
This is an excellent sharpening stone. I needed it to polish a katana sword and it worked beautifully. I also use it to sharpen kitchen cleavers and santoku knives. Not a very hard grit stone but rather soft and fine which does good job for honing. The two grit sides show wavering in the middle making the different grits mix. As this is in the middle shoudln't matter but the first time I have seen this. I have another stone that is combination but is much harder, rougher, that has perfectly aligned middle so that is what I am accostumed to. All in all great purchase and very pleased.Update: I bought a second one and it is a different grit. The first one was 400/600 this one is 120/240. That is TOO coarse for knife sharpening. Sharping stones that are $15-$20 are overpriced. Maybe $8 for a good kitchen stone but no more. Amazon sellers seem to be gouging customers by overcharging or including gimmicks like holders. I clicked the buy again when my old one wore out. It was dirty from sword sharpening and I needed something cleaner for my kitchen knives. I feel as though I have been switch and baited. It is not the same product I bought before. This stone will remove too much metal and leave a scratchy surface. Honestly when companies and online marketplaces get a reputation for shady practices it is usually a sign of bad management. I don't think Amazon will last longer if products continually upcharge.Further I do not think it is honest to hock expensive sharpening "systems" and oils when a cheap 600 grit stone works fine. Ridiculously high grit stones seem to be aimed at naive rich people. It is not the standard reliable quality that I am used to seeing in supermarkets.

Good starting point
I'm by no means a sharpening expert but these do work good. Good sharpening supplies are prohibitively expensive, so I decided to give this a try. I use mine with soapy water and keep them flat with a cheap diamond stone. They do wear quickly though (quicker than an old stone I found in a tool shed years ago), maybe something about the binder is lower quality. If you dont have a diamond flattening stone (all you need is a cheap one, just so its flat) you'll start to wear out the center and it wont be flat anymore. But a good way to take off a lot of material quickly

Nothing is wrong with this sharpening stone
I have somewhat, advanced knowledge of sharpening knives and hand tools. This sharpening stone (if you read on the package) is designed to sharpenhand tools, axes, gardening hoes, pruning sheers etc. If you are looking to put a fine honed polished edge on a fine pocket knife, there are stonesproduced and designed for that type of sharpening also. Those sharpening stones are a bit more costly, than the $5.75 tool sharpener as we are speaking of. Smiths poduces, in my opinion, the finest sharpeningkit for your pocket knives. These kits made by Smiths also contain a honing solution to keep your sharpening stones clean and in tip top shape.AS for this tool sharpener clogging, it needs to be scrubbed with soap and water with a stiff brush, from time to time.I hope this info will help those who are just beginning to sharpen, tools, knives etc. All you need is the right sharpening stone for instrument, thatneeds sharpening.............................

Good product
This review is for the quality of the product which is awesome and very nice with the two different sides, make sure you get the special oil though that these type of rocks require. Shipping sucked (but Amazon reimbursed me for damages), and was packaged at the Amazon warehouse with a couple phone cases, was delivered with the rock corner broken off completely and all other items in shipment were destroyed. If you buy this make sure you ask for it to be shipped separately because apparently someone didnt have enough common sense to realize you do not ship an 8 pound rock with fragile items. Like I said... this review is for the rock which is great and I highly recommend it. As far as the shipping complaint I had... just a heads up.

Standard wetstone for a good price
I ended up grabbing two of these as I always keep a spare in the drawer. I use one of these for our kitchen knives (both high end knives and general all-purpose knives) and another actually to sharpen my axes and hatchets. Yip an ax too.As with any large imperfection in the blade start with the course side of the stone, once the imperfection is gone switch over and complete the task with the fine side. If your knife/blade is just a tad dull and you want a new crisp edge just use the fine side of the stone and that is all you need. If the knife is just a tad dull and you start with the course side you'll just make more work for yourself.Personally I use these stones with oil than water as I find oil carries away the metal shaving away much easier than water. I want to grind on stone, not the metal shavings! If your concerned about the oil from the stone in your kitchen cabinet just put the grinding stone in a small Rubbermaid type container, doing this anyways will keep your stone always clean for the next use. With any grinding stone try to use the full length as if only let’s say the middle is always used then the middle of the stone will be concave over time, this is not something you want. The dark side is the course and the light side is fine.I received both wetstones in perfect condition.TIP:If you do have a stone that has a concave side you can refurbish the stone by just grinding the stone on something such as a cinder block, a cement block or even a rough floor tile. After this process that grinding stone edge will be true flat once again. However you can only do this so many times before you must grab a new stone.TIP:A tip I could offer for those who are thinking about using this for kitchen knives. Put down a wet cloth on your counter and then put this stone on that. Then grind using the full length of the stone. Using the wet cloth on the counter will act as an anchor so you don't have to hold the stone with one hand and the knife in the other. When I want a fine grind on my knives I use this method. As the title says a standard wetstone for a good priceAn honest review

Already opened...?
I am a little disappointed that this one was already opened. True that I have in the past opened and returned stuff from Amazon, that didn't fit my needs, but always I only return things in their original condition. Someone tore into this one with a very dull knife, all down one side. To the previous purchaser; Was that really necessary to destroy the box when you just as easily openen the end of the box? At least it looks like they never actually used the stone. Not the manufacturer's problem I know, so I am not going to knock stars off for that, although I should have because the seller resold this as new...I am giving four stars because it is a cheap sharpening stone. I can't complain too much, as it is one of the most inexpensive stones I found. I knew, when I purchased this, that the grits are not fine. When I do the tap test that I would do on a grinding wheel, the coarser side doesn't sound so good, which would suggest that there is a defect inside, but I don't know if that applies for a slab stone. The "not so coarse" side sounds normal to me. I hope it doesn't break, as some other people have noted. Some of the edges and corners have broken off, but that is minor. I think it will serve the purpose that I bought it for, which is to sharpen things like my axe...

Broken before arrival
I couldn't actually try it out because the stone came broken in two pieces. The box was too big and the sone inside too small without any sort of protection so it wouldn't be rolling everywhere inside the box. Anyways, It was pretty cheap, couldn't actually expect much from that, just asked for a refund from amazon and that's it. That being said, there was no marking on the stone, like a brand or something else to get in the way of sharpening your knives/tools. The stone is actually pretty coarse and although it won't actually do a perfect job making the blade completely sharp, it's good enough for most applications and a better sharpener then those you just slide the blade on.

Great price. Good for reshaping but need finer to sharpen.
I purchased this stone to practice sharpening and to fix a set of badly damaged old chisels. The grit is very low (coarse) on both sides and the material is somewhat soft but it removed material. I was unable to obtain a sharp edge using such a coarse grit but I was able to reshape them nicely. I followed up by putting the final cutting edge on with a Speedy Sharp (available on Amazon and at Can Tire) and the chisels are usable again.Would not use this on my wife’s expensive kitchen knives but would not hesitate to use this stone on garden tools.Considering the $3 price tag, this is one of the best deals on Amazon. Highly recommended.

A steal for the price paid
As an add on for $2,99 this 120/240 whetstone is tremendous value and decidedly more than expected. It does a great job in the coarse resetting of the edges of knives before finishing with diamond and ceramic honing and causes less harm than Tungsten Carbide. It seems durable, so far and sharpens axes and machetes with ease. It is handy in leveling other whetstones. An outstanding value.
