Honest review
As honest as I can be: I bought this enclosure to replace my aging 4TB USB 3.0 HDDs. They are of the older standard, small and served their purpose well. I got tired of write speeds of less than 100MBs and decided to try the new WD_BLACK 8TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive M2 2280 as additional fast storage (truly a game changer for speed) (motherboard M2 slots utilized). Money well spent. A year and a half later, I'm still running my older USB drives to transfer files from my main computer to my backup computer. Now the review. I bought a new: 1.) SK Aluminum M.2 to USB NVMe SATA SSD Enclosure Reader, Tool-Free USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps NVMe PCI-E 6Gbps SATA M-Key / B+M Key Solid State Drive External Adapter with UASP Trim, for SSDs 2242 2260 2280 2.) and my third WD_BLACK 8TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive After putting it together, I anxiously tested the new drive's transfer speeds. With the type USB 3 to USB C cable I received just over 350MBs. No where near the new M2s capability. Next the USB C to UBS C cable which gave just over 450MBs. While changing the cables I noticed the enclosure was VERY warm to even hot to the touch, not a put in your pocket and run temperature. So I drilled 12 holed into the case, 6 at the cable side and 6 at the lock end on each side. It's still VERY warm but not overly hot. Better. A new USB C to USB C (longer than the OEM short cable that came with the enclosure) tested with a result of over 650MB write speed. Way better. PROs: Decent price, Fast transfer speeds with your own cable. CONs: Not great cables, Hot without the self induced drilled holes. For the price I would buy again but request the company take this review seriously.

Connects to SMART and HDDScan no problem.
Was perfect for trouble shooting a problem SSD, was recognized by SMART and HDDScan no problem and stayed cool enough to run a complete read scan on a 2TB SSD through HDDScan. Listen, don't try to run it constantly like a regular drive, and I'm not sure I'd use it for long term storage unless it's just for backing up data you aren't constantly accessing or altering, that really isn't what it's for. This little guy is a very nice tool to have in your trouble shooting stack. If the SSD you pull out of the donor has thermal tape on it that is thicker than the tape supplied with this unit, change it out: closing the case WILL chew up fatter tape and leave you a mess to clean up while you painstakingly remove pits of tape from the circuit board. I didn't think a few mm would matter, but it did.

Easy install, works well.
Love it. Easy to install SSD, no tools. Works well with windows or MAC.

Great, but not perfect.
As an enclosure for swapping in, & out m.2 ssd's, it's pretty simple. It's easy to put in, & take out the drive's. Speeds were no issue. Having a USB A, & USB C for versatility is nice. The enclosure itself is not very big. However, the hold down mechanism isn't the best. It works, but could be better designed. And HOT! My use is for cloning primarily so I've been swapping drives in and out for the last couple of days. For a 20 minute clone process this thing got hot! It comes with thermal pads, but with my plan to use this for these means I'm not intending on using the thermal pads. Maybe that would help with temps. Just using for occasional storage may not be so bad, but only time will tell on that. If I use it that way. All in all, it's a worth while product for the price. Does exactly what it says it does. Simple as that.

Perfect enclosure and it is great to restore deleted files unlike a thumb drive.
I recently purchased the SSK Aluminum M.2 to USB NVMe SATA SSD Enclosure Reader from Amazon for $18.99, and I must say that I am quite impressed with the product. The enclosure works beautifully, just as advertised. However, some people complain about the top speed of the device not reaching full potential, but it's important to keep in mind that it states the top speed is 10gb/s, and the drive needs other efficient hardware to reach full potential. (I just noticed in my pic the particular PC I am using has a USB-C that I am not plugged in to which would speed this drive up, it is nice to have it be able to plug in both types) While some people have complained about the tiny thumb screw, I believe it's understandable given the size of the drive and enclosure itself. The product is priced reasonably at $16-20, so I don't think people should be whining about it. The USB-A and C cables included with the product worked just fine for me, although they are a bit short. I purchased this product to expand an additional SSD hard drive in my computer that I installed games on, and it was great. I was able to copy my existing SSD drive onto a new expanded size Drive and then place what was in the enclosure in my computer. I took out the SSD that wasn't my computer and now I have a massively sized external hard drive to play around with. It was definitely worth the money. One thing to note is that unlike a thumb drive, files that are deleted do not permanently disappear. They are put in a trash can, and you can restore or undelete the file by pressing Ctrl Z. Overall, I'm quite happy with my purchase of the SSK Aluminum M.2 to USB NVMe SATA SSD Enclosure Reader. It works great, is slim and easy to use, and has a solid drive holder that is not going to slip or come loose. The holding screw is a bit tricky to install, but once it's done, it's great. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs a slim M2 enclosure for their backup or just a huge USB thumb nail type drive with tons of storage. Make sure to use the "Safely remove hardware" function to unplug this, or turn the PC off before unplugging to prevent corrupting the drive.

works great at a great price
works great! can read both SATA and NVME drives. the ONLY thing that I would have preferred is for it to have a silicon plug to hold the drive in, instead of the metal screw and cap.

Easy install; Great for Permanent or Temporary Use
The pieces of SSK M.2 enclosure fit together beautifully. The outer, metal case slides on and off easily and locks in place securely. The lock is easy to operate. SSK provides the tiny screw and a post to secure the M.2 drive in the socket. The USB interface is fast. I had an M.2 from a failed laptop and needed to recover my data files. This was easy and quick. This proved to me that the drive was not the failure point on the laptop. The only limitation is you cannot boot from this drive using the USB connection. I ultimately had to install the M.2 in a PC and boot to get to my browser so I could export the bookmarks. Since I used the SSK drive for relatively short periods, I did not experience any of the heat issues others have mentioned. I strongly recommend installing the included SIL pad on the drive when putting this together; it is critical for conducting heat to the metal case whether used briefly or for long periods. Fortunately, the SIL pad is reusable! This makes the SSK enclosure great for a permanent, external drive system or for frequent changing of M.2 drives for testing and temporary use. Recommended.

SSK Al USB-C to M.2 NVMe Enclosure Reader - Great Value
Pros: - Inexpensive compared to other enclosures. - Works with M.2 2240, 2260, & 2280 NVMe SSD. - Tool Free - Easy to use. - Comes with heat transfer tape pads. Cons: - The little screws holding the SSD to the enclosure are somewhat awkward to install. Summary: This aluminum NVMe enclosure does the job that other enclosures do but at less than 2/3 the price of its next low price competitor. I used it to initialize and format some 2TB Samsung 970 EVO drives and Silicon Power 2TB M.2 2280 NVMe drives for upgrades on some laptops. I also used the enclosure to do cloning of the OS, software, and files off the smaller NVMe drives in the PC's using the USB-C port. Everything was easy and simple with the drives and enclosure recognized immediately by Windows 10. I experienced no signs of overheating even though I did not use the heat transfer tape provided. The only small inconvenience was the small screw (hence small inconvenience) used to hold the SSD to the enclosure board. It is round and rotates in the enclosure board when trying to put the nut on from the other side. It can also fall out of the enclosure board when turning it over to install the SSD. My solution was to put a small piece of tape over the screw head to hold it in place while installing the SSD and putting on the nut. I took the tape off after installation. After I figured that out, it saved me several minutes of finicky time when changing out SSD's in the enclosure. A very minor point that I did not detract any stars from the review for. I recommend this SSK Enclosure because of the low price for high performance.
