No. Mine stay on all the time. They do automatically switch off if you unplug them or switch the socket off.

Does it affect cats or dogs

I have a 14 year old Jack Russel and he seem fine with it,Haven’t seen so much as a spider since I installed them

Can you get these for continental sockets?

Not sure to be honest, but if needs be just buy a travel plug adapter pack and plug these into the adapter travel plug then into your continental socket.
