Ridiculously low price for a superb box set
Not sure why, but lately there have been some excellent box sets with very low prices. Exactly why doesn't matter, as I'll just buy them while I can!Put simply, Kings College is the premier choral group in the world. Having been there, listened to them live several times, and owning almost all their recorded output it's great to see a box like this one, combining some of their best recordings, for such a low price. Whether you're a choral fan or not, this is one box you need to get to hear the best choral masterpieces in the world, sung by the best choral ensemble. One of my favorite pieces is Zadok the Priest, by Handel. No one does it quite like King's College. The rest of the disk of coronation anthems are similarly stunning. The Rachmaninov Vespers and Bach Magnificat are superb. The Vivaldi Gloria is transcendent, as is the Allegri Miserere (accompanied by wonderful pieces by Frescobaldi and Gabrielli. The Allegri Miserere done by this group is my favorite because it uses the (presumably) original all-male choir with boy sopranos to hit the high notes. And, for a change, the piece is performed in English. This is a marked contrast to many more recent versions of the Miserere which use female vocalists to hit the high Cs, and sing in Latin. There's nothing wrong with women singling, or singing in Latin, of course, but I feel the King's College version is more authentic to what we'd have heard in a church several centuries ago. There's a lot of great music here. In fact, there is not a bad piece, a mediocre performance, or a bad recording in these five disks. I owned all of them separately (some on LP!), and have bought this box set for several friends who are getting into choral music. All have remarked on the beauty of the disks.Sound like a fanboy? Well, there's a simple reason: I love this music (I'm a choral fanatic), and King's College is the sine qua non of this genre. The recordings are excellent, the mastering of the discs from analog originals are solid, and the music is transcendent. Listen early on a Sunday morning, or late at night with no lights on, and you'll feel transcendent too!

Worth having!
This renowned choir is glorious and to have so many of their albums for such a low price is fantastic. My only reservation is the recording quality. Not sure what happened in the making of these CDs, but on our B and O player, we have to turn up the volume super high, just to hear them. But that's no fault of the choir, but might explain the price.
