Can this be used independently with no laptop? Asking for my nephew who is a total beginner and needs something he can use independently.

You have to keep in mind this needs to be plugged in with a DAW to control sounds. The MK3 Mini comes with free versions of Ableton and ProTools, I highly recommend Ableton. It also comes with some free instruments, like the Lounge Lizard keyboard plugin. It has a set up guide built in on its website. Your nephew will have to do some research on DAW's and MIDI before he can get started. Luckily there are plenty of beginner videos on YouTube.

Does this controller come with abelton live, or do you have to buy abelton live separatly to use it?

Does it come with a usb cable? And is it compatible with ableton live 10

Yes, it comes with an USB cable, mine was orange, but I seen some boxes that come with a black USB cable. And yes, it works great with Ableton Live 10, 11, etc. As a matter of fact I believe it's designed for working with Ableton, even though I have used it with FL Studio 20 too...
