The genre of Blues has tradionally been the realm of men, spinning tales of woe and misery. But as long as there have been men singing the blues, there has been a small segment of women blues artists who have gone almost entirely unnoticed. BLUES GUITAR WOMEN traces back to the hey-day of blues, the 1930's, chronicling the blues guitartists, including one of the most prolific women of blues, Memphis Minnie, who's carrer spans nearly 50 years. This album is a chronicle of the hidden side of blues throughout the twentieth century, the womens side.

When too much isn't enough
I picked this up on a whim and have to say that it's been a very regular visitor to my stereo. The variety here, the sheer number of new artists this collection will expose you to and the fact that this collection can be played in any company are just some of the good points here. As has been noted before, one disc here is full of acoustic material and the other electric. And boy some of these ladies can shred. What amazed me though was just how uniformly good each individual song was - although it took me several months to have each song seep into my brain given the number of tracks here. And evem more impressive was the track sequencing, which must have been a real pain, has been done very well. Each disc flows like it was all done by the same artist, the discs unfold before you and go up and down the gears in a very natural manner. The liner notes are also impressive albeit brief as they give you some details of each performer and as such this compilation is a brilliant place to start if you are new to the genre (like me) as you can cherry pick your favourites and then explore that performers discography at your leisure.Highly recommended even if this is not your usual musical genre.

Excellent 2 CD collection
I really appreciate this 2 CD set. 1 with Contemporary tunes, and one of a more traditional sort.RUF Records has a terrific stable of artists, and their compilation CDs are top of the line. There are some decent liner notes, and a little biography of each artist on the CD. (Written by Sue Foley)Highlights are "Mediterranean Breakfast" (By Sue Foley) and "It's a Blessing" (By Maria Muldaur and Bonnie Raitt)I recommend this collection to anyone looking to hear music that rocks, has great guitar, and some very powerful vocals. My only complaint? I wish this were a 3 CD set.

.Sweet Pea Loves 'em
I bought this CD a long time ago but never got around to really listening to it. Debbie Davies, Deborah Coleman, I already had some of their CDs. "Mediterranean" by Sue Foley, man, this song is so strong, going from acoustic to electric and back to acoustic. I also liked "Lynns Blues" by Barbara Lynn, "Navajo Moon" by Ana Popovic, "Can't Quit The Blues" the guitar work of Laura Chavez in Lara Prices' Band is outstanding, driving , hard...then cool off with "Lonely Lonely Nights" by Eve Monsees. "Dreamland Blues" is another great guitar work by Erja Lyytinen. This two CD set just shows to go ya that there are some real cool cats that can purrrr and growl...

nice selection
CD 1 is the electric or "contemporary" cd with deborah coleman, joana connor, ana popovic and 12 more. CD2 is the acoustic or 'traditional CD" WITH RORY BLOCK, SUE FOLEY, JO ANN KELLY and 11 more. No matter how deeply you're into the blues, there's going to be some artists and songs that are new to you and you'll probably like more than one artist you never heard of before.Sue Foley provides liner notes and has a song on each CD.

A great way to hear new artists
This is a rather expensive (these days) double CD with two different edges to the blues. The first CD is the heavier syyle which I don't enjoy so much (thus the lost star) but the second, which is more acoustic blues, with some technical brilliance, which I enjoy
