I have other books that are better for restoration, so this one is a great general info to get you started and to put you in the right frame of mind. Log cabins are work and you must accept that fact or have money to throw at paying someone else to do the right ... maybe.

The title of this book should be The Complete Guide to KIT Log homes. I learned a couple things but it is clearly about kit log homes. Ive been researching for a couple months and have decided on the butt and pass log homes . This book tries to steer you away from doing it yourself and promotes the kit homes as if they are working for them. So, it's very informative if you want to go this route. But, the title really should let you know that. . This is a big decision and one thing it did do is reinforce the fact that I do not want a log home kit. .

I won't say I was disappointed in this book, but I'm not sure it ought to be called a "complete guide." It's got a lot of useful information, to be sure, but it's really more of a big-picture overview of log home construction. Despite a copyright date of 2008, the book feels somewhat dated. The writing style is a bit stodgy.

I wish I would have purchased this book B4 I bought my home in Illinois. Although my jhouse was about 14 years old, it is a solid now as the day it was completed. The Ahmish crew that constructed my house is as good as it gets. I'll retire inthis house. I absolutley love it. The book is a great technical reference, especially for the weathering and "chinking" that is part of routine maintenance of a log home. Thanks to the author for such an informative approach. Dan

If you are like me and like to do research BEFORE you start a project and you are thinking about building a log home, this is a great book to increase your knowledge on the subject! Very good info about all the considerations going into planning a log home. Definitely a good purchase!
