Really loved Hesiod's Works and Days

I am so fond of Hesiod's Works and Days that I also bought the Audible version, which is about an hour long. This work offers insights into the ethics and wisdom of ancient times, including serious teachings, superstitions, moral lessons, and accumulated wisdom. It makes for an enjoyable and enlightening listen. With this Loeb verison on hand, which is small and portable, you can read anywhere you like and bring the wisdom with you anywhere.

Slight damage

Great translation and an excellent resource for students. The book arrived in slightly poor conditions, however. The green outside cover appeared to have been roughed up and had slight tears and discoloration.

Kinda of boring

The book is made very well and also includes the original Greek, but I did not really enjoy the writing itself. A bit boring

Please hire a new book binder…

The book is great! But the binding is garbage, I have older Loeb Classical books in better shape than this one. This is how it came out of the box.

Translation good, actual works split

Theogony, the first couple hundred lines are great until it gets to the end of Cronus. It diverges into LISTS, very boring. Picks up after twice the number of lines and gets alright at the end. Works and Days was generally much better, lest lists, more good stuff. The introduction to Hesiod is in depth, and the Testimonia is comfy to read for fun, but all at once may be a bit tiresome

One of the most known Poets of all-time!

Hesiod would never know how he would become a leader in poetry and hymns, lasting from the 8th bc to late antiquity and up to the Byzantine era. As such, he would become an object of a cult in many Greek states. Born as a shepherd in Boetia, he would become a poet due to anointing of the Muses through a dream on Mt. Helicon. He would say that "he was self-taught, and a god has plated in my mind all kinds of poetic paths." His poems illustrate time; past and future. Associated with Homer, many late antiquity philosophers would debate on who came first (Homer vs. Hesiod), and whose writing influenced the other. His name is derived from hedonai (hesi) which means to enjoy and hodos which means "he who takes pleasure of the journey", yet the poet himself didn't travel but once to enter a hymn competition in Chalcis and once to travel to the funeral games of his dear friend Amphidamas which occurred around 700 b.c. This volume is spit between two of his greatest works. Theogony (Greece was the only culture to write verse relating to Theogonies) as a biography/historiography of the birth of Gods and deities. Works & Days is a treatise disciplining his brother Perseus on the manner of justice and importance of work. In this treatise, he does a great job in explaining the best times of the year to set sail and to plant and harvest. Included in this volume of Loebs is the Testimonia. This is a collection of epigrams and poems which used Hesiodic meter and structure. One example is by Georgics "Hail, great mother of fruits, land of Saturn, greet mother of men: it is for your sake that I embark upon matters of ancient praise and art, daring to open up holy fountains, and I sing an Ascraeann song through Roman towns." This book is a good resource to learn about Hesiod and the Hesiodic movement to follow. The Theogony can be tedious and reflects in the rating.

Hesiod: Theogony. Works and Days. Testimonia.

Hesiod's poem, like Homer's the Odyssey and the Illiad, is an interesting version of creation, human and divine interventions, and practical advice on other matters regarding human relations.
