What is the shortest distance the camera will focus at. I want to take photos of rats

Good question for the manufacturer. In the month we had this camera (before it died) we got some great close-ups of sand hill cranes that appeared to be less than a foot away…

Does it have to be connected to wi-fi. in other words can i leave it out in the middle of nowhere and retrieve it later to look at the pictures?.

Does not need to be connected to wifi. You have to put in the scandisk in the trail camera. Then when you are ready to see what the camera caught you take out the scandisk and insert it into the drive for it in your computer. It's a little tiny slot. I didn't even know it was there until I started using the trail camera and needed the scandisk. So yes, leave it out in the middle of nowhere and retrieve it later to look at the pictures.

Should the camera be on or off when inserting the SD card?

Should be OFF when doing any settings. So OFF for inserting or removing the SD card. Turn ON only when ready to close the camera.
