Very good!
If you’ve ever had the pain of desoldring pin headers using a soldering iron and solder sucker you will know how difficult it can actually be and how time consuming it is.One of the big problems is that no matter what you do with a manual solder sucker, there always seems to be a bit of a connection which means that you can spend a long time going over each pin trying to free any remaining solder. This tool on the other hand, wow! You simply position. It over the pin and pull back so you’re not touching the PCB and press the trigger and instantly the pin is devoid of the solder that was there a second or so previously. You need to be careful when dealing with old PCB’s, the safest thing is to double check the gap between rhe pxb and nozzle to ensure you don’t rip up the pad or any traces, older PCBs will be a lot more fragile. That said, it hasn’t skipped a beat since I got it and it has made life so much easier. The only real let down is the “stand” it comes with, it’s terrible but you can buy a better one from hakko or from another third party.

If you don't have money to waste, get this
I have spent some time and money with cheap alternatives from the orient and all I got was frustration. I wasted just about the price of this tool with two alternatives and some spares only to decide I need the tools to work for me, not the other way round.I have only had this for a couple of days and the results are making me smile. It balances well in my grip, is not heavy, heats up fast and the pump is strong. The fact that it heats up fast allows me to even switch it off between desoldering components and I expect that to prolong the life of the nozzle.I have only used it at the lowest setting that gives 300C temperature. Pretty enough to desolder small components and even some structural solders (like from TO-220 heatsinks). It is very well built. The collector tube is easily removed by pulling back the black tabs behind and they click and stay there. The filter and shield get in place and stay there while you mount the tube back - not like some knock-offs that you need to fiddle with springs and filters to put them back together. The pump is loud and I like it loud and strong. Desoldering takes about as long as soldering.I continued some work I had interrupted when my Chinese pump died on me and with that one, most leads would catch and stick even when solder was sucked. With the Hakko, solder is melting immediately and a brief push of the trigger removes it all. Components just fall off or are readily able to be pulled out without any resistance or catches.I have had (in the three days it has been used) success in removing 8 pin op amps, capacitors with leads that were twisted to the pads before original soldering, 1mm lead large capacitors and even TO-3 transistors. The leads of the TO-3 are too thick to get in the nozzle so I just sucked the solder around. They became loose even that way.Only negative for this unit is that it comes with a piece of sheet metal for a stand. That's an excuse for a stand but if you have worked for a few years you probably have a decent stand to put it on.

Helped with desoldering but has limits
I do a lot of soldering and every now and again I need to desolder stuff. Its works well when its actually working. However quite often, it doesn't work great. It gets clogged often and takes time to clear. However once you are back on the road then it works well.

You get what you pay for
Used this great portable solder sucker and must say it's fantastic, works effortlessly removing solder from double-sided boards. A breeze to use, a little expensive, but worth it after you save time on repairs. If you are reading this it's obvious you are interested in this unit, buy it, you will not regret it.

Works great, but is expensive
Has made desolating old IC’s etc a much easier task. During use uou must keep cleaning the tip with the wire and check the filters for flux build up otherwise the tip will irreversibly block! I found out the hard way…

Can’t go wrong with Hakko
Great, high quality product. I do a fair share of rework on PCB and desoldering components with the FR301 is a breeze. No lifted pads or any other damage. Simply works and does the job.
