These are “THE” sash strings you want to restore old windows
I like to fix and restore old houses. Almost all homes from the turn of the century through the 1940’s used sash rope and lead counterweights to open and close double hung wooden windows. Over the decades, the rope eventually fails and the homeowner either props them up with a stick (you know who you are!), hires someone to replace the sash strings or more than likely hire someone to replace the windows entirely. The sad part about replacing these old windows is that the glass is quite special. Ever see windows that are “wavy”, almost as if they are melting? That’s because it took almost 100 years to get that way and it’s very unique and shows character. Some say that these old windows are “too drafty” and get rid of them. With little effort, the windows can be made to be air tight and I would argue better than new because they are made to fit the space they are in…exactly. It just takes maintenance.Anyhow…back to the sash review. This sash rope is very high quality. It’s made well and is made of Cotten material so it blends with an old house and windows quite easily. I bought the cotton with blue diamond patterns because I wanted a little extra style and to show off the old windows like they were new again. This rope will NOT disappoint. It fit the pulleys perfectly (don’t forget to grease the pulleys and be careful not to get grease on the rope). Tying it to the lead weights was also simple and easy to work with. I use shrink tubes at the end of my rope cuts to prevent fraying but you can burn the ends off if you prefer. Regardless, I suspect this rope will last for at least 50-60 years, if not longer. Don’t sweat it if you think it won’t fit. It will!I’m very pleased with this product and will buy more! I got the 5/16” at 100ft and it was enough to do 4 full sets of double hung windows (both upper and lower for each set) and I had some left over! That’s 16 pieces each at about 4 feet long.

White & Blue rope
I was using for a rope bowl purse.. The rope is stiff and not soft, so I had to change the project to a bowl.

Disappointing
I used existing sash rope to determine size for the original windows in a 1919 Craftsmen home. This product installs thicker than 5/16 inch. The Blue stripe makes it highly visible from inside the home. I'll need to purchase thinner, less "vibrant" cord and reinstall.I didn't see "made in the USA" on the product's label, which was one of the deciding factors when I ordered it.
