Product Description Final album from folk-rock duo with ex-Steeleye Span Gay & Terry Woods (Terry later joined the Pogues). .co.uk Husband and wife team Gay & Terry Woods were a product of the 60s explosion, both in Ireland (Terry was part of the hugely influential Sweeney's Men) and the UK (the two were founder members of Steeleye Span). However, after recording just one album with the folk rockers--Hark! The Village Wait, a fantastically raw and spirited recording--they decamped back to Dublin to work on their own music, of which 1978's Tender Moments (here on CD for the first time) was the highlight. Any expectations of a folk workout are rapidly dispelled by the countryish rock of opener "We Can Work This One Out". Despite an impressive cast of Irish session names, this is a very transatlantic sounding album, making more than the occasional nod to the American 70s sound of the Eagles et al. It's all rather engaging, even if it has dated a little. The Woods would part company and head their separate ways--Terry to a stint with the Pogues at their height, Gay to front gothic synth punks Auto De Fe before returning to the Steeleye fold where she still remains. Tender Hooks sounds like nothing either of them have ever done, before or since, and as such is a curio that is worthy of further attention. --Phil Udell

A late but real discovery!
I first came across Terry and Gay Woods at the time when they were founder members of and still in Steeleye Span. Their first album "Hark the Village Waits" was superb, but sadly but after Gay and Terry left the band, I found subsequent Steeleye Span albums to be disppointing. I realised at the time that Gay and Terry were key members of the band but heard no more about them (perhaps I just listened to the wrong radio programmes). All these years later, and with the help of the Amazon website I found this album, "Lake Songs From Red Waters" and "The Woods Band". All three albums are worth getting, although "The Woods Band" is different in style to the other two, and some of the tracks seem as though they could easily have followed on in the mold of "Hark the Village Waits".I bought all three albums without having heard any of the tracks on them. I was disappointed when I first played them, particularly this one, but quickly changed my opinion after repeated plays. I am now completely hooked on this album and "Lake Songs from Red Waters". "The Reward" is probably my favourite from the three albums but there are lots of great songs on all of them.

PSEUDO-AMERICANA DRIVEL. BUY THE COMPILATION UNDER THEIR NAME OR EVEN THE WOODS BAND. MUCH BETTER. WHY IS THIS FILED UNDER STEELEYE SPAN?
