## Description

These Captain O-Ring keyboard switch dampener o-rings can be quickly installed on the stems of your keyboard keys to prevent keys from bottoming out. Bottoming out occurs when a key is pressed down to its limit, causing the key stem to collide with the switch casing. This results in a loud "clacking" noise while typing that affects virtually every mechanical keyboard. Captain O-Rings's keyboard dampeners provide a shock absorber at the bottom of each key to create a consistent, uniform sound while typing. These dampeners also reduce the travel of keys by 0.4mm, which greatly reduces finger fatigue. Durable EPDM rubber o-rings don't crack like black buna o-rings typically do in this application. To install, simply remove each key, place o-ring around the stem, and replace each key. Installation typically takes 4-5 minutes for the entire keyboard and lasts the life of the keyboard. I decided to go with these O-rings as I quite like the chiclet keyboards on some laptops and feel like I can type very fast with them, so these "fat" rings (as opposed to the red "thin" rings) should do the trick. Installation was simple, albeit a bit tedious. I don't have a keycap puller so I fashioned one from a paper clip. (You should do the same instead of paying $6.99.) I initially only installed the O-rings on the 26 "letter" keys because I wasn't sure if I'd like them or not. Of course, as soon as I hit the space or wanted a capital letter the difference (in noise and feel) was massive, so I ended up putting the o-rings on all the "main" keys too (shift, enter, backspace, alt, etc.). I quite like the difference. It is noticeably quieter, although most definitely not silent. I would say the sound level is reduced 30%. But the biggest difference is the feel, as the travel is much shorter and the keys "bounce back" at the bottom of the stroke - as a result, my typing speed went up about 12 wpm. Overall, would recommend especially if you are wanting a change in the feel as well as the sound, but if your intention is only to reduce noise, these may not be the best solution. Still, a good thing to try before buying a new keyboard with different switches, however.

**Q: Does 0.4mm in the specs mean 4 millimeters thick? 0.4 millimeters would be very very thin (i.e. less than half a millimeter).**
A: Hello.  The 0.4mm is not representative of the size of the o-rings, but rather the reduction in key-stroke travel with these installed.  You are correct, the o-rings are thicker than 0.4mm :-).  They are actually about 1.75mm thick.

**Q: So do you put these on the switch or the keycaps?**
A: you put this on the keycap, on the post that is attached to the switch. As it descends into the switch it hits the switch face. Slightly shortens the travels and dampens the impact.

**Q: Does it come with a cap remover?**
A: Hello, this kit does not include a cap remover. Most keyboard keys can be easily removed from the board with anything flat/thin enough to get under the keys and lift.

**Q: Will these work with gateron switches?**
A: These should work with any removible mechanical key caps because they are applied to the stem of the key cap, not any part of the switch itself. There are great tutorial videos online if you Google how to apply o rings to key caps.

These O-rings saved my keyboard from getting trashed. They made my keyboard a bit quieter and softer to type on. However, they didn't dampen the sound as much as I hoped, and they changed the feel of the keys slightly. They are also a bit pricey.
