great for price and very sharp!

Same design as the luthier I study with in Cremona uses. The purfling cutter worked far better than the more expensive Gramil and other cutters I own, better control. With a little filing I was able to shim the blades and used it for double bass purfling. Did a great job.

It works, but I needed to sharpen the blades. It’s a bit of trouble to align properly, and even with sharpening did quite a bit of tearing rather than scoring the wood properly. If you get this be very careful when using it

This is a well made product. Solid brass and the blades are well hardened carbon steel. The only problem is the blades come shaped like a pointed needle which is not the right geometry for a purfling cutter. The points should be sharpened on only one side with a small knife like edge on the point. Fortunately after I reshaped and sharpened them properly it works great for violin purfling. It came with two extra blades too.

This is a well made tool and does exactly what it is designed to do. You need to understand that there is a distinction between a purfling cutting tool and a purfling marking tool. This tool is intended to mark the outlines of purfling inlay only, then you need to follow the outlines made with this tool with another cutter (exacto knife, etc.) in order to get the depth needed to remove material and to inlay the purfling. There is no practical way to make this a cutting tool as the steel tips are pointed and not beveled. I purchased some Ibex single bevel cutters with the thought that I could interchange with this tool, but those were way too wide and would not fit.Overall, I am happy with this purchase. The only reason for the 1 star deduction was the lack of clarity.
