Hebrew Infusion: Language and Community at American Jewish Summer Camps
A**A
If you've ever loved summer camp, this book is a great read!
The authors create a vivid picture of life and learning at Jewish summer camps. This book is meticulously researched, drawing on the linguistic practices of 36 camps with differing religiosity, geography, size, and educational approach. The authors use the metaphor of an infused drink, that may have only a hint of flavor or may have a strong flavor, to explain the varying degrees to which Hebrew language is infused into different camp cultures. They clearly show how this approach to language and culture--very different from language immersion approaches--has permeated American Jewish camping and given rise to a new kind of language, which the authors call Camp Hebraized English. A delightful read, full of vivid examples and beautiful prose. A definite must-read for all who love camps, love language education, and love good stories.
