Joe Jackson's amazing follow up to his debut.
When I hear an incredible debut album like Joe Jackson's "Look Sharp!" I always wonder if they have anything else to offer or have they shot the whole wad. In Joe Jackson's case, "I'm the Man quickly dispelled any doubts. Another album full of great music. No junk or filler. I recently realized that I didn't have a copy of this album to download for my music player. The import CD is out of my price range, so I just bought the MP3. (It was about the same price as the CD should have been.) But at least I can play it in the car now. Similarly to "Look Sharp!" which I also just replaced, this album kills from end to end. I think I have both on vinyl. Maybe I should sell them and get rich.

You da man!
In 1978 I needed something to see me through the onslaught of a terrible trend known as Disco. I wasn't hardcore, and I still liked to rock out. But there was a niche where New Wave and Punk found a place. I wasn't into anarchy, but I do like a good lyric. Joe Jackson had songs that spoke about what was currently on my mind--not so much on social issues, but more of my social life. It's was good to know I wasn't only one having these thoughts. The awkwardness of finding a place for yourself to be yourself. This record pretty much helped me through understanding the dynamics of an uneven relationship, the enlightment of braggadocio, and the frustration of having a voice to call your own. This is a must have CD for those having endured the Disco Fever.

Joe Jackson - He Is The Man
"I'm The Man" was a quick follow-up to Joe Jackson's debut album and was released less than a year after his previous disc. Jackson continues in his new wave / punk vein with more catchy tunes that range frenzied punk smashups like the title track to piano ballads like the European hit "It's Different For Girls". This album could really almost be considered part II to his debut. The music and style are very similar. There is some autobiographical stuff here especially "On Your Radio" and "The Band Wore Blue Shirts" which tells the story of Joe's cover band days. Pretty much every song here is strong and is one of the better albums to come out of the new wave movement of the late 70's early 80's. This is an essential album for Joe Jackson fans.

... in a long time and now realize just how great it really is
I hadn't heard this one in a long time and now realize just how great it really is. As with most artists, the first few releases are usually the best work. I Look Sharp too, but this one is more fun and easier on the ear. I discovered Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello at the same time, and I am not the only one who says that. Of everything they both did, this is the happiest and most listenable. I don't know of any another guitar player who sounds quite like what you have here. Great pop/rock.

Still the same...
I hadn't heard this (other than 'It's Different for Girls' and 'Kinda Kute') since the early Eighties and still sounds as good as it did at the beginning of that decade (which wasn't all bad - just mostly). I never understood why 'Kinda Kute' wasn't a hit; it certainly should have been. One of those records that, if it came out in your youth, takes you right back there. Joe Jackson is a very talented artist who was always destined to move on beyond the confines of New Wave.

A classic from Joe's back catalogue
A classic from the time when Joe made the kind of music I loved. Lovely to own it on CD now too, though a pity it lacks any extras.

old love
one of my first records. Tall, angry young man of the late seventies and eighties. His first and this second record are still the best.
