The Hotel Cat (Jenny's Cat Club)

Lifelong favourite of our cat loving family
We were a fanatical cat family while my children were growing up. We had between three and five cats at any given time- once we had twelve for a short while when two at once had kittens. My first child, named "Jenny" (Jennifer- I wasn't very original back in the '70's) was a vociferous reader- and she LOVED this book- it was her very favourite as a, maybe seven(?) year old- she had her own copy and it was re-read many many times. Her two years younger brother, who was even more of a cat fanatic, borrowed it when he began reading and war broke out- this book was so treasured that she wouldn't lend it out, even within the household. So her brother got his own copy and this book made him from a non- into a reader. Not as precocious a reader as his sister, none-the-less, this was my middle child's first read alone chapter book. Ten years later, my third child loved it,too, and the others in the series, just as much. Now my grandchildren have taken up the torch and despite the fact that this and the other Jenny books have been borrowed from the library many times, MUST have their own copies. So the younger child, a precocious reader at 6, received the whole set for her sixth birthday last month. These books are certainly dated, the language is sophisticated for a six (or so) year old the plots are a bit weird to adult ears and rather unlikely. But I am not a child- this book, far and away was, (and is) probably the front-running favourite book of my children's childhood. I cannot tell you why- I was glad they read them to themselves back then. but it is a children's book. All my children, and now grandchildren, adore it. It is right at the top of their all time favourite books list. I was THRILLED to see the set re-issued.

A charming story for thoughtful children.
This is a charming story about an aimless young cat who finds a home, a purpose, and a friend at an old New York City hotel. It's a good story with several funny and heartwarming moments. It's one of the sequels in the Jenny's Cat Club series, and Jenny shows up, but is not the main character. If your children like cats, that may help them get into this story. I will say it may not be for every child, as it's sort of a thoughtful story and not big on action, and doesn't have pictures on every page. If you haven't read these Jenny books before, it's hard to explain their quirky flavor. Esther Averill must have been interesting to talk to... I think.

One of the sweetest little Cat Books ever!
Little Jenny Linsky has a very special place in my heart. I took my niece to the Library, she was only 6 years old and I told her to type something into the computer catalog she typed her name, Jenny & I told her I would type my favorite thing which was Cats. The computer truncated the 2 words and out popped Jenny & The Cat Club. It sent chills down my spine. I really didn't think anything would pop up. We checked out the book and 6 months later I bought 2 of Esther Averill's darling books about Jenny and her friends in the Cat Club. This book will complete my collection. I not only love the way she wrote the books but the pictures are beyond adorable. I purchased the original book,, which was then out of print, I got a collectors edition for $200.00 well worth the fond memories I had reading it to my niece.

A childhood favorite
Circa 1969 I named my first cat Jenny after Jenny Linsky, so I was delighted to find the Cat Club books again. They're still a great read, and the stories are still relevant and meaningful for today's kids.

The Hotel Cat Superieur
Read everything written by Esther Averill! Especially about cats, with illustrations. This novella traces the history of street cat without without a name to Hotel Cat of the Royal. As usual, with Averill, you get a sharp sense not only of the cats but also of New York City.
