Just another day for the 87th Precinct.....
A spate of burglaries in empty apartments; a crucifixion-style murder that involves a discarded sneaker; the return of the Deaf Man planning his latest heist - all grist to the mill in Let's Hear It For The Deaf Man. This 1972 87th Precinct novel sees McBain pretty much on top form. By this stage of the series, he was clearly comfortable with the voice he had found for the style of the books, and had some fun throwing a variety of stories into the mix. The book is peppered with visual clues that the Deaf Man sends the 87th squad to either guide or mislead them as to his latest criminal enterprise. If there's perhaps a bit too much going on, and some of the plot resolutions seem a bit convenient, well - this is still way better than most things that pass for crime fiction these days. One chapter acts as a kind of interlude in the story - a general sweep of life in all its frustrations and violence on a Sunday in the city. It could almost be a short story in its own right. It could also have been penned yesterday, such is the contemporary feel to the themes explored.

If you enjoy Precinct 87th stories this one will not disappoint you
If you enjoy Precinct 87th stories this one will not disappoint you. Building as always into an intriguing and cleverly constructed mystery you really feel you know each of the characters personally. Humorous and with some beautiful descriptive passages about weather, cities, individuals, etc. this is a must read.

Well worth a read
It is years since I have read Ed McBain and I was addicted to his 87th Precinct novels. I then cleared them out a party from this book. I loaned it out and never got it back. I am so p!eased I bought it again as I enjoyed it as much now as I did then. His moody description of the city always enchanted and still.does.

Amusing
Up to Ed's usual standard. Nice twist (or two) in the tail. Good read. Makes a change from British or Scandinavian crime.
