Excellent read
A great start to an exhilarating story. Aenor, the main female character is sassy, entertaining yet naive making her likeable. Lyr is the main male character is secretive, but is he friend or foe the uncertainty leads for a puzzling twist and turns. The evil behind the strive the characters suffer is a wonderful shock. A slow burn gives into romance with some steam. Heavy on character building and low on world building. Well written story with enough angst, suspense and action to keep on reading.I recommend this book and will definitely read book 2.

Amazing
I couldn’t put this book down, hooked from the start - read it in two days! I love Aenor, she’s fierce, independent and brave. A kick-ass heroine and I’m excited for the next book in her story.

Three and a half
Three and a halfAenor is a Fae princess in hiding or should that be queen because her mother was killed when their kingdom vanished from the world ? Aenor has many regrets not least the fact that she was a spoiled, notorious drunk but also that the majority of her inherent magic was stolen from her. She's tried to do much better in the human world, killing the monsters and befriending those who need help. What she doesn't want is to be caught by the Fae but everything goes down the pan when a Fae King discovers her hideout and she does the only thing that she knows will save her and that's kill him with cold, hard iron but sometimes the dead come back !I had high hopes for this but sadly just didn't believe in the relationship that gradually formed between Aenor and Lyr. I'm a hopeless romantic and to my mind this was just about lust and a quest for power. I did enjoy the twist ( obviously my lips are sealed ) but was totally baffled by the character Salem who was introduced. Is he the true enemy or is he going to be another notch on her bed post ? I'm informed that the next book gets better so might give it a go but as I type honestly I'm undecided.

Romance Girlies…
This is a lovely book, and no one can discredit it for that. But, I went in this book expecting more than I got, which is my fault in all honesty. This review is just to tell my overly romance girlies that this book is not for you. It’s more of an action book with tension between the main characters.

A great start to another wonderful storey from CN Crawford
Ok my fav works by CN were her some of her earlier books such as the Shadows and Flame series and Dark Fae books but i always wished that there was more heat and sizzle. This books starts down that route and hopefully as the storey progresses it will become steamier. This is more of a romance based book which normally would put me off but there is enough storey content that i really enjoyed it. Interesting plot with lots of promise for the future books.

Good first book
Told from Aenor's POV, the main female lead who is a likeable character. Lyr is the male lead who hides secrets. The story is fast moving with lots of twist and turns. Still not sure if Lyr is hiding important information from Aenor who is the queen of Ys. Aenor meets Salem near the end but who really is he and why does he have her power, or does he? Lots of mystery so will be reading book 2. The other thing I didnt like was Aenor's constant lusting over Lyr. Sexual content. Recommended.

A good in between read
This book was difficult to get into…The beginning felt stretched and Gina is highly annoying. Thank the gods the miscommunication trope didn’t last long and I feel sorry for Aenor that she had such twisted parents even her mother when she came to think of it in the end.I wonder what Salem wants from her and Lyr. Definitely going to continue this serie 💜

Enticing, awesome, breathtaking
Going through this book is like diving in the Caribbean Sea, its blue waters, the various species of fish and plant. The story brings all these pleasure to the readers, finding a beautiful place after the dark images from its beginning. It could feel like a cliche that Lyr and Aenor would fall for each other, but C.N. knows how to make it different and this is the challenge of any author: be original. An enticing, awesome and breathtaking book waits for you, don’t miss it.

Not finished yet but loving it!
I’m about halfway through this book but I really wanted to share just what a pleasant read this is. It’s very funny and though I’m not a huge fan of fantasy lit, this is grounded enough in the real world that I can lose myself in it. Can’t wait to keep reading!

The stuff of legends awaits you
Dark King is an epic tale of timeless themes; love, hate, death and resurrection. And let's not forget betrayal. Betrayal thrums though out the lines, stalking Aenor and Lyr, and through them, we are hunted as well. It's hard to write a review for this book, it truly needs to be experienced. It's not just one thing, it's not just a story about a royal fae girl who had crackpots for parents. Those sires may or may not have messed Aenor up (just a bit). Lyr, a sexy demigod, has some issues that could be explored in extensive therapy. Speaking of therapy, in the wings is a smoking hot - literally - Salem, offering up tastings of forbidden fruit so he can hunt Aenor down at a time of his choosing. He has his own agenda, and he's rolling it out in his own good time. As this saga unfolds, we travel through the biblical lands of Acre, Jerusalem, and modern Tel Aviv. The flavor of this backdrop informs the telling from the scent of the sea, to that of decaying grasses and moldy caves, long damp from the absence of the burning sun. We drive along it's roads. We climb it hills and hide in its dwellings. Where the story takes place adds to it in unseen ways.C.N. Crawford uses all of that to bring a rich tapestry to life. What I enjoy most about this author is the feast she lays out for the reader. She is a skilled wordsmith, setting scenes with words that create a portrait for us to savor. And she's funny. Aenor has an edge to her that rubs up against the ancient setting, and it's delightful. For example: “The Winter Witch has prophesied your future. She says your blood is poisoned.”“She said the same to me. It could mean anything. Do you have any idea how many value-brand cookies I eat per day?” Aenor is in the game to survive, and her dialogue cracks with that energy. Lyr is a god, yes, a lowly demigod, but the same is true for him. He sounds like a centuries old, battle worn, card carrying, self righteous lord of death.“I made you coffee.” He pointed to a mug on the bed next to me. “You seemed keen on it earlier.”I raised my eyebrows. “You know how to make coffee?”He glared at me with the offense of someone who was just asked if he knew how to read. “Coffee is a Ysian delicacy. Its ancient traditions were passed down to me by the finest coffee makers. Also, I found Nescafé.”These are rich characters, carefully crafted so that the words that that say and don't say drive the story. A rich tapestry.Of note is Salem. He is not Lyr with a different haircut. Often writers just change names and clothes and Bob's your uncle, and call it a day. Salem is a whole other ballgame. He moves differently. His manner of speech is languid. And he's dark and broken. He's utterly delicious. Luckily for us, Salem 's story is in the second book in this trilogy, The Fallen King. The Dark King is an amazing read. For me, it hits all the right notes. The story is timeless. The characters are richly written. The narrative sets my imagination ablaze as I color the settings Crawford has set for us. Enjoy this book, savor it, let it weave it's magic over you.
