Sarah Chang at just 11 years old caught 'live' and a match for anyone
This is a truly astonishing disc. Recorded 'live' in 1993 when Sarah Chang was only eleven it displays a fully mature musical mind and a technique that led Menuhin to comment that 'Sarah is the most wonderful, the most perfect, the most ideal violinist I have ever heard' - and he should know! She was just ten years old at the time.I have a considerable number of recordings of this concerto from Heifetz and now up to Sarah Chang and beyond. She is certainly able to hold her own against any of the competition and still give an added freshness to her interpretation. This freshness is a characteristic of her personality. Those who have seen her on the EuroArts DVD of the Spanish Night will readily identify with her winning way when it comes to communicating with her audience. The Hungarian dances are equally fresh and make a very enjoyable make-weight but it will be for the concerto that most will buy this disc. At its current low price it really is most attractive and would be a valuable addition to any collector's library. Colin Davis and his orchestra provide excellent support and the recording is also very good with a reasonable solo/orchestra balance. It is hard for me to imagine purchasers to be anything other than delighted with this disc so my personal view is that this would make a good buy although it may be worth mentioning that this has now been re-issued at a lower price range.
