Neglected Mizoguchi
The great Japanese director Kenji Mizoguchi had been directing films in Japan since the 20's but only really became internationally famous with his run of period classics in the 50's, starting with 'The Life of Oharu' (1952) and including 'Ugetsu' (1953) and 'Sansho Dayu' (1954). Immediately preceding these he made 'The Lady of Musashino', featuring his regular leading lady Kinuyo Tanaka and Masayuki Mori, who went on to star in 'Ugetsu' and had just played the part of the murdered husband in Kurosawa's breakthrough movie, 'Rashomon'.'The Lady of Musashino' is a melodrama of extra-marital affairs and temptations, set in the idyllic Musashino area of Post-War Tokyo. Excellent performances abound in this neglected minor-masterpiece. Recommended to all fans of Japanese cinema!

Low-key but beautiful Mizoguchi
Okay it doesn't have the spectacular, epic brilliance of this director's better known Jidai-Geki films, but this modest tale of self-sacrifice in post-war Japan is a masterpiece by anyone's standards, with a typically heart-breaking performance from Tanaka, and gorgeous cinematography. At this price, how can you resist?
