A great sportswriter who deserves to be better known
You might not recognize the name Si Burick, but he was -- no exaggeration -- one of the greatest sportswriters of the 20th century. Over 60 years as sports editor/columnist for the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News, he proved himself an outstanding reporter and a wonderful storyteller, usually employing a light touch that made his columns a delight to read. Universally admired among the sportswriting fraternity, he won every award worth winning: He was the sixth recipient of the Red Smith Award from The Associated Press and the first writer from a town without major league baseball to be honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame.
