Good value and functionality - Comparison notes between TP-07 and TP-11
I bought this unit (TP07)on my own dime for personal use, and later received one of the TP-11 as a gift. I use these digital food thermometers for smoking, barbecuing, and sometimes baking on my wood-pellet grill. This is a 2 part unit – the standard wired digital thermometer with probe, along with a wireless receiver unit (the one with multiple buttons) that displays the temperature and allows for setting of timers and target temperatures.Overall: I’m very happy with both the TP-11 and TP-07. I found them both to be accurate, intuitive to use, well made, and with quite good instructions. I could find my way through the functions without the instructions – which demonstrates both the relative simplicity of operation but also the thoughtful layout. I found both units to be well worth the extra $10 or so to get the additional wireless capability. So much heat it lost with each opening of the grill or oven, and this unit really helps me adhere to the mantra of smoking and slow-cooking: If you're lookin', you ain't cookin'!Positives:• The product was packed well and came with batteries for both the home unit and the receiver (4 AAA total).• Instructions easy to follow and understand.• The home unit has a stowable stand that allows it to sit next to the grill. The number display size isn’t huge, but I found that I could read it while sitting about 8-10 feet away.• The receiver has a rotatable belt clip that also serves as a stand. I liked that the top of the metal clip was formed such that the unit rests flat when laid on its back.• The units found each other and connected within seconds of inserting the probe and turning both on.• All the USDA temperature guidelines are pre-programmed… select your meat (ground beef, ground poultry, beef, chicken, poultry, veal, pork) and then select your ‘taste’ (rare, medium rare, medium, medium well, and well).• In my case, I used it for pulled pork which needed to go to 190 degrees, but the USDA guide is 160 for pork. All I had to do was press the up button to increase my target temperature to 190.• The screen flashes different colors as you cook – one color flash every several seconds. Blue for the start to within 15 degrees of target; green for the last 15 to the target, and red when the target it reached. At first I thought this was a little gimmicky and not necessary, but then came to appreciate it as it let me see at a glance from across the room that everything was on track. You can’t turn this option off, but I think it’s a nice addition.• I found the probes sturdy and easy to clean with a wet sponge and dish soap.Negatives:• Really nothing substantial. The battery cover on the TP11 receiver is a little odd – it wasn’t clear to me at first how to open it, and it turns out that you need to lift up on the hinged portion that extends down onto the bottom wall of the unit. Not an issue with the orange TP-07.• Some have noted/lamented that these are not waterproof - but they're not advertised to be and really can reasonably expected to be. That said, the battery compartments to have a rubber seal that would keep light moisture at bay.Compared to the TP-07• The only differences are the case and the button locations. The screen and functionality are the same. Both appeared very accurate and in strong agreement… they varied a little (less than 5 degrees) during the smoke stage, as would be expected because they were in different pieces of meat. But when the meat was covered and steaming, I expected they’d get even closer – in fact, they stayed within 0.5 to 0.8 degrees of each other. Impressive!• I didn’t notice the TP-07 lose the signal at all, but I only would have seen a small overall portion of the 8 hours of use.• The TP-11 lost the signal twice that I noticed during an 8 hour smoking session for pulled pork. I was about 30 feet away through one exterior and one interior wall. The first time it reconnected within a few seconds without being moved. The second time I moved it about 8 feet closer and it found the signal again.• The TP-11 has the white and blue, rounded-edges case that looks nice in the kitchen – blends right it. The TP-07 has the more rugged-looking orange and slate case, but that TP07 case is not ruggedized and the bumpers wouldn’t likely do much in the case of a fall. Again, I think they’re effectively the same unit in different cases to appeal to different style-tastes. They're the same price.

Still going after 2 years, works well
I went thru several of these probe thermometers. I don't care about the remote and would rather it be a single unit. But I use the temperature alarm all the time and it's great. Probe, set and forget. The only risk is if you placed the probe in the wrong spot but usually that ends up going off too early vs too late. The interface could be a bit better. It has a timer mode I never use (why would I use the timer on this? I have a phone I set timers in all the time). And it has meat selections. I get why they do that but honestly I just want a tool that does what it does well.I like this and would buy one again if it broke but ThermPro: if you make a revision of this product here is what I would like:1. Display temp reading and alarm temp set on the sensor unit and alarm on the sensor as well.2. Add a curve fitting calculation to the time and temp readings (say just the last 2 minimally) and extrapolate the completion time in minutes. This is a killer feature to have a sense how many minutes until the chicken is done so you can start the side at the right moment.3. Make the remote optional and two things: current temp, alarm snooze button (2 minutes) and display-minutes-to-done. Maybe this u it does that calculation. Extra credit for a little graph of the readings with the predicted cooking curve shown as a curve. Move c/f switch to battery compartment. Having it on the button UI is in the way. Make it waterproof (pool? washing the car?), Make it clip on a pocket better. It's combo stand/clip thing is clever but it needs both a solid stand and a solid belt clip. Or maybe you can make the combo hold better?4. I don't know but I suspect the probes are the things that often die? It would be great to have a spare probe in the probe unit behind a door. When I'm relying on a probe thermometer it's a real bummer when the probe has died. It would be bigger but that's ok. Might be nice for it to be heavier anyway, I find it tends to slip off the counter sometimes.5. Consider dropping the "meat" and doneness selection. I find it in the way as I always set a number. I realize some people might want that. Maybe different models?6. A "test alarm" button might be nice. I know it's loud enough now but when I use a device like this I want to check that I'm going to be able to hear the alarm. Maybe a button on the sensor base that can double as a "find unit" button and alarm tester.

So good, I gifted one to the mother in law...
Very accurate and easy to use. Good range. The one I bought has lasted multiple years so far, and with all these things in mind, I bought one for my mother in law. That, is something you only do if you are confident in a product.Perhaps Amazon need a 'how likely are you to gift this to your mother in law?' star rating?

Keep the oven door closed
This makes accurate, repeatable cooking available without constant messing with the oven or the grill. Cooking by time is not repeatable , measuring the temperature means constant checking, which changes the cooking time. This way, you attach the probe, set the alarm temperature, and forget about it until the alarm goes off. Batteries last a long time - the original set lasted a couple of years.

Great Remote Thermometer!
Great thermometer. I like the fact that I can monitor remotely. I have given this as a gift too.

Great for meat and bread!
I love this product! I no longer dread making tri-tip or salmon. I have also used this when baking bread as well. If using for bread you will have to find the closest preset you can for the final temp of bread or just keep a close eye on the temp. So easy and you can be rooms away and still watch the temperature.

Outstanding BBQ temperature gauge
I bought this outstanding temperature gauge for my charcoal BBQ. I received this type of gauge about 14 years ago. However it had died on me. I can monitor my meat temp all the way in my house chair which is about 40' to the BBQ. Wow, how great that it works!

Easy and useful
Took about 5 minutes to set up (it comes with batteries and everything), the controls are intuitive and the manual is concise and informative. Really helpful to be able to see the temp without opening the oven. I've used cheap "stick" lowtech meat thermometers before and this is absolutely worth the price.Worked to get moist chicken baking in the oven without having to worry about timing too much. I accidentally turned off the oven half-way through (I was trying to turn off a timer...) and keeping an eye on this thing still created perfect chicken despite it sitting in a ?? temp environment for a ?? amount of time.In terms of manufacturing it looks sturdy and well-made, and the temperature reading seems accurate so far. For best results though I leave things a bit under-done (like 5F?) because it will rise to temperature as it rests. You can easily use their presets then modify them down a couple of degrees to do this.
