Topeak MTX TrunkBag - Rear Bicycle Bag - Spacious Storage and Easy Mounting

I recently purchased one of these, have used it for a week or so, and therefore cannot vouch for its durability, its ability to stand up to NYC's "mean streete" over time; BUT, so far, THIS THING POSITIVELY WALKS ON WATER! It is made of a sturdy nylon (including the pannier "saddlebags") and thus gives every indication that it will hold a lot -- and will hold up -- over time. This was a major weakness of a previous similar bicycle trunk bag I had (different brand) , which wound up with the saddle bags HELD TOGETHER WITH DUCT TAPE. The saddle bags hook to the bottom of the rack, and so far there is no indication that they will get caught in the spokes or will interfere with pedaling (problems mentioned in reviews of other, similar products). The bag itself has plenty of room, without even using the expansion features, holding a rain jacket, a rain helmet cover, a plastic cover for my backpack, a very large plastic ziplok bag to cover contents of one of the saddlebags in case of heavy rain, a four foot long 10mm security cable, and probably some other stuff I have forgotten. And there is room left. The whole bag appears to be solidly built, secures firmly to the bike rack (N.B., which HAS TO BE A TOPEAK RACK -- if you have a different rack there is, I believe, another model which is secured by velcro straps --) and has shown no sign of looseness or wobbling, even over NYC streets and potholes. In addition, although, when I received this, I scoffed at the usefulness of the handle on the top of the bag or the included shoulder strap, there are times when for reasons of security or convenience it really is easier to simply unhook the saddle bags from the bottom of the rack, slide the bag off the rack, and carry the whole thing to the office or wherever you are going. There is expandable webbing on top of the bag which could hold further items, and there is a "cupholder" at the rear of the bag for a bottle or other drink container -- and, typical of the well-thought out design of the bag, there is a cord to tighten around the drink container so that you don't lose it on the first bump! Assuming that you have two bottle holders on the frame of your bike, this gives you three, which should hold anyone for a ride of any length between stops to refill. In my opinion, it is well worth spending the few dollars more to get this model, which is the largest they make and which includes the expandable top to the cargo area of the bag. If it holds up over time, it will have been a very good purchase.

I love this bag! As compact or as spacious as you need it to be. I am a veterinary student, and often have a lot to carry on my seven-mile commute to school. During a typical day, I might have a couple of binders full of class notes, a change of clothes, an iPad, coveralls, and a pair of muck boots crammed into my backpack. All of this weighs more than it sounds like, and makes for an uncomfortable commute and an achy back when I get to my destination. The Topeak bag, coupled with the Topeak rack, is the perfect solution for me. I can easily fit my iPad and wallet in the main compartment, along with biking essentials such as my hand pump, spare inner tube, and patch kit. There is even a smaller pocket within the main compartment that is perfect for cell phone and keys. The side panniers are plenty big enough for binders and clipboards, and I was pleasantly surprised to find than that I can even easily fit my Lacrosse boots in a pannier if I fold the soft rubber top of the boot down. (I love that my dirty boots and coveralls can go home in a completely different compartment than all my other school supplies, something that's hard to achieve with my old backpack.) In addition to the handle on the top, it also has a removable shoulder strap that is perfect for carrying it from the bike rack to class. And I love the quick release system that makes it so easy to get on and off the rack. Very happy with my purchase, and would definitely recommend to anyone in need of a product like this. It saves your back and helps you stay organized if you have lots of things you need to bring with you while commuting.

OK, I have been using this bag daily on my work commute for about a month now, and I absolutely love it! I respect something that is well engineered and this bag certainly is that! That said, this bag is made to be used with Topeak MTX racks. If you don't have one of these, either buy one, or look for a different bag. While I gave this bag 5 stars, it is not perfect, but certainly worthy of 5-stars. First the good points: -Perfect size for what I wanted. I love the fact that I can have a clean looking bag on the rack that has fairly large panniers ready to fold out when needed. The main bag is pretty good sized. The bag comes with a velcro divider, that can be placed anywhere, but I don't use it as I prefer the single large space. That space will accommodate a carton of 12 eggs (actually 2 cartons). It will also hold a full sized iPad, although that has to go in at an angle, so it limits what else can be carried with it. It can also hold a medium size U-lock. -The easy click mounting on the rack is fabulous! Very easy to take on and off and very secure when mounted. The panniers include shock cords to loop around the bottom of your rack, so they are also very sturdy when utilized. The quick release is a very simple design, but works great. It also appears that if the spring ever broke, it would be replaceable by just removing one screw. I doubt that will be necessary, but I always like having repair options. - The panniers are well designed and hold enough for my needs. One pannier is able to accommodate a medium weight jacket or a pair of pants and shirt with ease. One pannier will also easily hold a pair of size twelve shoes. I have stuffed a fair amount of groceries in there, and it has held up fine so far, but I will revise this review in 6 months or so to see if any problems arise. OK, so what could be better? Well, I guess the zippers could be beefier. A few reviews knocked the bag for the zippers. Honestly, they seem pretty good to me. They are all double-zippers, which is nice.They open and close easily, but I suppose heavier duty ones would be better. Also, the handle on top does make the top zipper support all the weight of the bag when carrying that way. I guess this might stress the zipper over time, but if you use a bit of caution, I don't think it will be an issue. One last thing I wanted to point out is that you can store a little bit off stuff in the side pockets even with the panniers folded up. I was storing my spare tube in there and it fit fine, but you certainly don't have a lot of extra room as the panniers take up most of it. All in all, a very clever design that I think is worthy of 5 stars! I hope you found the review helpful and feel free to ask any questions. Cheers!

It took weeks of deliberation trying to find the perfect bag for my purposes. While the DXP isn't perfect, it's pretty close. A little background on what I use it for: I take care of my disabled girlfriend at home. I live in a relatively small town near the Twin Cities and on occasion need to run errands for groceries, prescriptions and other small stuff. I try to get out of the house a little bit everyday to avoid going completely stir crazy and it always bothered me to start and run the car to get to the store which is only a couple of miles away. So, I bought a bike that that can be used as a "pack-mule" of sorts. I looked at many bags/racks both online and in stores trying to find something that could carry a significant amount, be able to be attached/detached quickly and easily be carried when off the bike. This one fills the bill nicely. Likes: 1) Retention system - Easy on, easy off. Stays put while on the bike. 2) Carrying handle and strap. 3) Fold out bags are great. 4) Bottle carrier is handier and more important than I thought it would be. 5) Significant amount of space. It's not huge by any means, but I can put in a few days worth of groceries, along with my bike repair kit and other odds and ends. I've never packed it to capacity. 6) Expandable top space. Dislikes: 1) There's a bit of play between the bag and the retention system on the rack which causes a small rattle when the bag is empty. I kind of expected this, so it's not that big of a deal. When the bag is full and weighted down, the rattle goes away. I'm trying to figure out a way to take the play out or cushion it somehow without compromising the retention system. Riding a quiet bike is important to me. 2) As mentioned in other reviews, the zippers seem kind of on the lightweight side. I figure that as long as I don't force them, keep them lubricated with either wax or dry graphite, they should be okay. The zippers are the reason for me only giving it four stars. Unknowns: 1) I have not used this in the rain, so I can't speak to how well stuff will stay dry. I may order the rain cover when I get some spare cash. 2) I've only been using this for about a month on a semi-daily basis, so I can't speak to extended durability. Overall, I'd buy it again and have recommended it to others. It's not the bag that I would choose if I was going to do some serious, long-distance touring or a lot of off-road work, but for my pack-mule, grocery-getting commuting it's just fine. I originally thought that the price was a bit steep, but, again...I'm satisfied. Ride safe.

First off: Despite the photos, THIS IS NOT the MTX 2.0 bag. I thought it was, which is why I bought it. Although the descriptions don't mention anything about it being the original style, I'm kind of glad that I got this one instead. From what I was reading & seeing in videos on YouTube, this version has 2 zippers on either sides of the pockets, whereas the MTX 2.0 only has the one, so you have to zip and unzip it the entire way. I know it's kind of pedantic, but to me I actually like that small quality-of-life feature. Outside of that and the MTX type, they are practically identical, so I am not going to take off any stars. The bag itself is excellent quality!! Despite it not being waterproof, the main compartment seems like it has a waterproof lining to it. Do not take that as fact though because I haven't tested that aspect of it. Also, the adjustable divider inside is super nice to have, and the pockets on top, the expandable top, and the bungie laces on top are absolutely amazing. The panniers seem to hold a very large amount, and I could even get my laptop and several books inside, so this will be perfect for bike-packing. They also fold up nice and clean into the side pockets, and there's even room left over if you wanted to put some smaller things inside like a wallet, keys, small tools, handcuffs, mice, etc. It also even has a nice shoulder strap so you can carry the bag with you when you leave the bike. (May be a little more cumbersome with the panniers out) My main concern (I haven't used it on any rides yet) is the lack of any kind of Velcro (or similar) fastener for it attach to the sides of the rack. It does, however, have a bungie cord at the bottom of the panniers with a looped end which you can use to fasten to the bottom of the rack where it attaches to the frame, but on my Salsa Journeyer it's way too long and I can't attach it to anything, so I'm going to have to find a solution for this. Gorgeous bag, very well made, and HIGHLY recommended!

I bought this bag 2 months ago to replace a medium sized gym bag that I was bungee cording. This bag was able to swallow everything my gym bag did and more. The MTX mount made it great when I got to work as well because I didn't have to fuss with the cords. The multi compartments is great because I'm no longer unpacking my lunch in the locker room. This is the second Topeak Trunk bag I own, the other being a EXP bag I bought originally to replace the gym bag, but let the wife have so I can get this one. So far both have been exceptional for us. The side pouches look small when holding it (all folded up it would fit in my gym bag), but they quick expanded out. I have found that the sides will carry a 8x11 sheet of paper easy (may want to get a hard back folder to carry though), work clothes, shower items, and a gallon jug of milk with tons of room left. I have even been through the rain with it and it keeps things dry (sever storms might be a issue though). Cons? I don't like the the way the handle is attached. It is great, but attached to the top flap so the load weight is transferred through the zipper and not directly to the main body. However, the shoulder strap is more than enough to handle that part. So I set it up like this, In one side I would put a full set of work clothes: Pants, underwear, socks, under shirt and collared shirt. In the other side I would put a towl, a wash rag, and a gallon ziplock bag with my shower items. In the main portion, I had a rain coat (a medium duty one), a ball cap, a hand towel and my lunch (2 sandwich sized boxes or a single quart bowl). ** 1 year update ** No complaints still about the bag. I use it everyday even through the winter and the rain. Nothing has failed on it and it still looks great. I found that I can carry a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread in each pannier with no problems. I was also able to store a hoodie in the main compartment along with my other things in it.

When I bought my new bike recently I had one of the smaller ToPeak 6L MTX bags fitted along with an MTX track carrier. I love that bag and it's great for short to medium rides. However, I intend on going for longer rides and also potentially riding to work meetups where I will need to be able to carry more stuff and a change of clothes (I'm sure my colleagues don't want me sitting there in a pool of sweat!) :). I checked around and discovered ToPeak did a series of larger bags, and after reading so many positive reviews on Amazon I decided on this one. I am certainly not disappointed. This is a superb bag! It's 20L compared to my other, which is 6L, so overall there's a lot more room. The top of the bag has an extender zip which allows the top to expand upwards to allow for any larger more awkward items. The side packs can be used in their closed position for smaller items such as a portable hard drive, small notebook, phone etc, or they can be unzipped and fully opened out to work as panniers. Once opened up, the outer sides are fabric (albeit strong weave nylon), and would be great for clothing and lighter items, perhaps even a pair of shoes, but I certainly wouldn't risk putting anything too valuable in them, like a laptop, or heavy like books - I'm not sure they would really hold up to that kind of weight and wouldn't provide enough protection for a laptop or tablet due to the potential for knocking against the side bars of the carrier, not to mention the shock forces of hitting potholes and bumps in the road. When carrying my laptop I would always use a backpack anyway. I also like the little touches with this bag that set it apart, such as the carrying handle on top, and the extra water bottle holder on the back. As with all the MTX bags, this one is a breeze to fit to the MTX track on the carrier, and removes in seconds. Loads of room, very secure, no fear of it falling off during a ride. Excellent product overall.

I exaggerate only slightly; it does seem that the Topeak MTX Trunk Bag DXP is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. I am using the DXP with the Topeak Explorer Bike Rack attached to my Specialized Sirrus hybrid bike. I've only had the DXP for 2 days, so I can't speak to how it will stand up to long term wear and tear, although it does seem to be very well made. I am in love with this bag! My first outing was to the local farmer's market. Parking near the market is very limited, so getting there by bike works prefectly. I locked up the bike and strolled through the market, picking up a long loaf of French bread, a huge bunch of Swiss chard, arugula and basil. I grabbed a bag of tomatoes and some fresh mozzarella. Returning to the bike, I wan't sure that everything would fit, since I already had a couple of bottles of water, some tools and other items in the bag. Amazingly, everything fit. The bread and the bunch of swiss chard were too tall to close the zippers on the side bags, but everything rode safely and securely. A couple of hours later, I went out to the grocery store and bought a good sized cart full of items. I loaded the DXP: in one side bag went a 5 lb bag of flour sandwiched between 2 bottles of wine and topped with a bag of limes and a wedge of cheese. In the other side bag went a box of dishwashing detergent, a half gallon of milk a 1/4 of a watermellon and a bag of lemons. I filled the top compartment with a dozen eggs topped with a large bag of tortilla chips. All of the zippers closed! The side bags have an expandable pleat running through the center that allows them to grow to fit the contents. The weight distribution is terrific; with most of the weight lower than the top of the rear wheel, the effect on balance isn't noticeable. When I reached home, I was happy that I could just unsnap the DXP from the rack and carry it into the kitchen. No bags required! The final outing of the day was an expedition to the municipal pool for a swim. I carried the towels, bathing suits, sun screen, goggles, shower stuff and a few other odds and ends for me and my girlfriend. Once we were there, I could take the DXP right into the locker room. Very nice! The DXP has a mesh pocket on the rear end for a water bottle, another mesh pocket on the top for small items, a small bungee net on top for things too long to fit in the top compartment and a small strap on the back that I use to clip my Planet Bike Blinky Super Flash Tail Light . Inside the cover of the top compartment is a small pocket that I use for a few tools. The side panels are well designed. Folded up, there is enough room for a Kryptonite Evolution Series 4 Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket (4-Inch x 9-Inch) (if you seperate the U from the bar) or some small items. This U lock will also fit in the top compartment. Once you open them, the rigid side covers fold against the rack stays and prevent the nylon bags from hitting the spokes. For extra insurance, there is an adjustable bungee at the end of each side bag that can be snapped onto the bottom of the rack. This is a really great piece of gear!
