When it first arrived, it smelled strongly of fresh bamboo, which is a very pleasant smell. However, I recommend giving it a quick, mild, soapy wash to ensure that it is properly cleaned and ready for use.I have owned similar bamboo tea trays before, and my previous experience led me to expect leaky trays that would leak all over my tables. Fortunately, I have not experienced much trouble with this one. However, the size of the tea tray bothered me; I have a four-cup tea set with a teapot. This is quite a lot of items and they fit too tightly on my tray, which made me afraid of dropping things.Additionally, the tray can hold up to one cup's worth of liquid. After that, you'll need to find a way to drain it, as there is no exit valve at the bottom for draining the tea. You'll have to carefully tip it over into a bucket or larger container. I have wet my floor on multiple occasions because of this, which is not a pleasant experience.I would say this tea tray is perfect for people who either want a tray for decoration or for a very small travel set, perhaps if they are using a gaiwan. Don't expect too much space, and make sure not to leave water in it overnight, as it could leak out onto your table. In my case, I am going to return this product as it doesn't fit my needs. I have instead purchased another one from a different online store with dimensions that suit my specifications.
