A newly-appointed Supreme Court Justice must settle a controversial moral and legal dilemma with his tie-breaking decision which may also have serious implications on his own family's harmony. Andy Garcia is cast as Justice Joseph Kirkland who, in his freshman term on the court, must wrestle with the dilemma of freedom of choice versus the right to life. Judge Kirkland tries to find a balanced response as the lone voice on the court to weigh in, making his the critical deciding vote. A fictional story but prophetic
I liked Andy and some great actors in the film “The Swing vote” Amazon Prime. It is a fictional story but prophetic since Roe v. Wade is overtuned and a woman in Alabama is convicted of murder in the picture. The Pro-Life and Pro-Choice are well enunciated ,even though those two rights are not equal. The right to life is in U.S. Constitution and the Catholic Church holds that it is of the preeminent moral value. The Pro-Choice argument is weak when the convicted person claims to have aborted because it was her choice at that time; she was against abortion and wanted at a later date to have children when it was convenient. Life is not a matter of time or convenience. This film is prophetic because in was shown on TV April 1999. Next March 2022 the SCOTUS will hand a verdict on the Miss. 15-week abortion ban and Roe v. Roe could be overturned and abortion laws reverted back to the States.

People need to be educated.
All the controversy needs an objective point of vie, not tainted by religious beliefs or by opinions. Science gives that point of view, based on facts.. Science is unanimous in affirming the following:The Human Embryo, from implantation onward, is a Human individual.The Law must accept that fact... and then be fair. Right for right.Our Declaration of Independence characterizes the Right to Life as one that is UNALIENABLE: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

I liked Kate Nelligan. I was unimpressed by the rest of the cast and felt the movie lacked depth. The dialogue was hard to follow. Good to see Belafonte.

You have to see this movie - regardless of how you feel about abortion - the analysis of the decision is eloquent!My husband and I are on different sides of the argument and we both found appreciation in the thoughtful critical thinking.Attention all teachers: this film should be seen in the classroom.

I WAITED 15 YEARS FOR THIS TO COME OUT ON VIDEO AND IT WAS WELL WORTH THE WAIT. ANDY GARCIA SHINED ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE CAST IN THIS WELL THOUGHT OUT, PROVOCATIVE CHARACTER DRAMA.

Brilliant Moments Ruined By Preconceived Nonsense
The ruling of the court, the majority "opinion" was put forth as compromise. There is no sense, I suppose, in pointing out that compromise is inherently wrong - it is too much an accepted part of our unconsidered cognitive failure. As if a robber should be entitled to half of your belongings because he wants it all and you want to give up none. Well, let's avoid violence, criminality, prisons, all that unpleasant stuff. Let's compromise...The supposed key issue, the care of children, barely got a moment of ardent lip service; and it's solution, that states must be responsible for the irresponsibility or criminal behavior (rape, incest, etc.) if individuals, is more evidence that the right to harm is far more important than the responsibility for one's actions.The sophistry that purports to illuminate individual rights simply ignores the right of the innocent while protecting the entitlement of the irresponsible.There is no just way to place a time limit on ending an innocent life. Certainly, no person who is going to end the life of a child need wait until that child has become recognizable as human life. Ah, but we must not rush the right of indifference, convenience, selfishness, execution.The "angst" of the main character was dressed up like a lady, but it was throughoutand is in the end a donkey in a dress. There was no conflict, only a show of pretending consideration.There were some brilliant moments, a great deal of cynicism, and a conclusion that could never have come from a passionately caring, adoptive father.There is a reason this movie never found an audience; because it is fundamentally dishonest. It simply reaffirms "rights," both given and taken, that already exist. Those who were hopeful that supreme court justices could act ethically, at least on film, will be greatly disappointed.

Andy Garcia is really a great actor and he does a great job in this film. Worth watching.

The Supreme Court profiled
I had seen this drama some years ago and remembered just how good it was. I had to get a multi-region dvd player because it is only readily available in NTSC format. The film explores the debate about 'Rowe versus Wade' and abortion in the US. When a blockbuster film producer, in this case Jerry Bruckheimer, turns their hand to a more 'worthy' subject, they invariably bring a unique quality to it. A host of top notch US character actors make this a memorable film that exercises the mind even if you have not considered the issues in detail before.
