Humorous and EFFECTIVE instruction!
I am a huge fan of Gemma. And I’m a lover of cats. And I’ve always wanted to be able to doodle and draw more than just flowers. Not surprisingly, I felt I just HAD to buy this book.I’m pleased to report that Gemma did not disappoint! After reading the book (and practicing), I now am confident in drawing cats. Will my figures be posted in the Metropolitan? No. But I get a lot of enjoyment drawing them, and I’d no longer be embarrassed if someone saw me drawing them. So I view that as a win. In the first portion of the book she provides many great examples. Just at the point at which I was getting concerned that there would not be much instruction, she changed gears. She smoothly transitioned into showing how to draw a cat, detailed, step by step. You watch her process for drawing a cat: she starts by outlining the top of the cat’s head and ears, and builds it stepwise from there. At first, she never adds more than one line per drawing, so you see exactly what you need to add to your sketch. It could not be easier. She provides ample instructions on essentials such as ears, eyes, noses, paws, etc., followed by details - spots, freckles, even hats and other props! And not just for any cat - she even explains drawing different breeds of cats! For me, this book transformed a previously mysterious process into one that is very easy to understand and do. So it turns out that even if you don’t think you are in any way artistic, if you are able/willing to copy the very simple lines or curves shown in the book onto your paper, you CAN draw a cat!—I paid Amazon’s listed price for this book. I was not paid or in any way compensated for this review.

creativity and smiles
This book inspired me to draw my own little doggie using the book and her own personality. A happy thing in life!

Cute cat doodles
Doodled Cats is a companion book to Doodled Dogs, released 26th June, 2018 from author Gemma Correll and published by Quarto Publishing - Walter Foster. At 160 pages and 6x7", it's small and compact and good for purse or backpack for those meetings or lectures that call for a little doodling escapism. For those unfamiliar with author Gemma Correll's style (see the cover), it's quirky and a bit offbeat and oddly endearing. She has a large following on her blog and other social media platforms.Anyhow, this book gives some tutorial guidance for doodling cats in all sorts of costumes and situations. It's not primarily a tutorial book, half the page content is given over to entertaining cat factoids and showcasing the author's drawings, but there are some step-by-step tutorial pages to give the would-be cat doodler (ca'doodler?) a very gentle nudge in the right direction. One note; this book and the companion book about dog doodling have several pages which are identical to one another. I wasn't disappointed or annoyed, but having the exact same format in the same order with about 10% (+/-) of exatly the same page content is ever so slightly cheeky in my humble opinion.Anyhow, for people who love doodling cats in amusing positions, this is a moderately cute book. Ditto the dog book. People who buy both will be supporting the artist author (and publisher) and that's not a bad thing.Four stars, the world needs more lighthearted fun cartoons to hopefully distract us from the 'real world'.Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Charming and whimsical
What a charming and whimsical book! My five-year-old son loves drawing, so I’ve taken to doodling along with him. One of his favorite things to draw is our family, complete with our dog, so I thought this would be the perfect book to try out with him.The book is divided into four parts. The first part is full of quirky things like lists (including signs you’re a dog person – “Your pockets are full of poop pick-up bags”), dog facts, and a dog alphabet. It also has several pages of example dogs and dog faces, demonstrating different characteristics and emotions. The meat of the book is the 30-some pages in part 2 where you learn how to draw several species of dogs step by step (French bulldog, dachshund, bichon frise, greyhound, collie, and poodle). Part 3 experiments with hats, patterns (a tie-dye dog?), a series of anthropomorphic dogs (including Lucky the Lab Technician), dogs in costumes, dog houses, and dog toys. Part 4 is a series of templates of already drawn dogs for you to doodle on.It’s super cute, and suitable for children as well as adults. My five-year-old got a kick out of drawing dogs with hats, and loved looking at all the various dog doodles. If you’re looking for lots of detailed step-by-step guides, I think you’d be disappointed. Instead, it kickstarted our imaginations (astronaut dog! alien dog!) and provided a fun afternoon full of giggles and doodles. I think this would make a super cute gift for any fan of dogs and drawing!I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
