It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or intended for official military use. This black triangle patch commemorates 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, the Army unit also known as 1st SFOD-D, Combat Applications Group and The Unit. The triangle is the Greek letter delta. The Army established the unit on November 19, 1977, under Colonel Charles Beckwith and Colonel Thomas Henry, with a structure modeled on the British 22 SAS Regiment. It is headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Its first major mission was Operation Eagle Claw in April 1980, the attempt to rescue the American hostages held in Iran. In Grenada during Operation Urgent Fury in 1983 the unit earned the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. During Operation Just Cause in Panama in December 1989, Delta operators carried out the rescue at Modelo Prison, and the operation ended with Manuel Noriega's surrender in January 1990. In 1993 C Squadron operators fought in Somalia during Operation Gothic Serpent. The patch is a black triangle with a thin black border. A white double-edged dagger points up through the center, framed by an open gold triangle with a gold lightning bolt inside it. There is no lettering. It measures 4 by 3.75 inches with a cut edge and an iron-on backing that can also be sewn on. Wear it on a jacket or vest, or frame it in a shadow box with Special Forces and Ranger patches. ## Features - NOVELTY & COMMEMORATIVE USE ONLY – This is a collectible, novelty, or souvenir patch intended for costume, hobby, decorative, and commemorative purposes only.
