Used for depression, memory and thought problems, nerve pain, and more.
My physician told me about using Acetyl-L-Carnitine for mood. It has been effective and I am quite happy with it. The National Institute of Health published an analysis to compare the safety of different treatments for depression. They combined 34 studies to use data from 4,769 patients who took 20 different medications or supplements. Acetyl-l-carnitine had the best safety profile:"...MAOIs (OR = 9.77), antipsychotics (OR = 8.33), SSRIs (OR = 6.83) and other antidepressants (OR = 10.00) were significantly more often associated with treatment discontinuations due to adverse events than the complementary treatment acetyl-l-carnitine." Also reported: "Patients treated with the complementary treatment acetyl-l-carnitine LESS often reported any adverse event than patients treated with placebo (OR = 0.33) [emphasis mine]." PLoS ONE, 11(5), e0153380. http://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0153380This is the second brand of Acetyl-L-Carnitine that I have tried. Here is a comparison between BRI Nutrition and Doctor's Best:......................Dosage....Cost......Appearance............Capsule size.............................Works?.........OtherBRI Nutrition....500 ml.....0.11 ea..Fine, white powder..7mm diameter x 22mm long........Yes........GMP Cert, made in US, 1 yr freshness,.........................................................................................................................................100% satisfaction guarantee, veg capsuleDoctor's Best...500 ml....0.13 ea..Fine, off-white powder..8mm diameter x 22.5 mm long..Yes......FDA-approved process, GMO-free,.........................................................................................................................................pesticide-free, BSE-safe, gluten free,.........................................................................................................................................1.5 yrs on freshness, gelatin capsule Both of these products seem to work well for me. I like different things about them. The BRI Nutrition capsule is a little smaller, costs a little bit less, and uses a vegetable capsule instead of a gelatin one. The Doctor's Best is GMO-free, pesticide-free, gluten-free, and BSE-safe. Both say that they are made from Acetyl-L-Carnitine HCl. The Doctor's Best also mentions Sigma tau (I can't say that I know what that is). There are more uses for this product. Web MD has the following to say about it: Acetyl-L-carnitine is used for a variety of mental disorders including Alzheimer's disease, age-related memory loss, late-life depression, thinking problems related to alcoholism, and thinking problems related to Lyme disease. It is also used for Down syndrome, poor circulation in the brain, cataracts, nerve pain due to diabetes, nerve pain due to drugs used in the treatment of AIDS, and facial paralysis. Some men use acetyl-L-carnitine for infertility, symptoms of “male menopause” (low testosterone levels due to aging), and a disease of the penis called Peyronie’s disease. The body can convert L-carnitine to acetyl-L-carnitine and vice versa. But, no one knows whether the effects of acetyl-L-carnitine are from the chemical itself, from the L-carnitine it can make, or from some other chemical made along the way. For now, don’t substitute one form of carnitine for another. How does it work? Acetyl-L-carnitine helps the body produce energy. It is important for heart and brain function, muscle movement, and many other body processes. So, right now it seems that this product is a good part of my health arsenal, while which brand to use (between the two compared) might be left to a coin flip. They both seem to be great products! BRI Nutrition has a slight edge on pricing. My doctor has me take 3 of these each day, so the price difference is just under a dollar per month.I hope that this info is helpful to you as you make your shopping decisions.

FANTASTIC for weight loss, reduced appetite + BETTER than other brands!
I've logged on to say that this has helped me in numerous ways, i.e., with increased energy, stamina, sharpened cognition and MOST notably, reduced appetite and weight loss- but the effects didn't become apparent until I ran out. Like many people I take a slew of supplements, and it's difficult to be systematic about adding and subtracting individual ones in order to tell what's doing what. On top of that, you have supplements working synergistically, so it all gets very convoluted and confusing. To make a long story short, I'd previously hit on a regimen that was working spectacularly well for me (including high potency vitamin D3, in the neighborhood of 40,000 IUs a day, along with four a day of the requisite Vitamin K2 ] and Magnesium and Calcium, as outlined in the book THE MIRACULOUS RESULTS OF EXTREMELY HIGH DOSES OF THE SUNSHINE HORMONE VITAMIN D3 by Jeff Bowles). I have MS and was on a downward trajectory- D3, and other supplements have reversed my condition- I'm now healthy, knock on wood (you're welcome to email me if you'd like to know what's worked for me).Anyway, regarding BRI's acetyl l-carnitine, I added two a day to my regimen (along with 1200 mg. a day of Alpha Lipoic Acid by Nova Nutritions , because I read these two substances work synergistically), and found they had a MOST pronounced effect on my appetite, resulting in wanting to eat much smaller amounts. It also boosted my energy, cognitive clarity, etc. I'm not sure if it affected fat-burning, because I also instituted a low-carb diet. Really, I couldn't force down more food or overeat if I tried. In a nutshell, I consistently lost a pound every 1-2 days taking it. And here's the main point: when I got close to running out of this I ordered another, cheaper brand and it had none of these effects, they disappeared. I know because it's the only change I instituted- everything else remained the same. With the new brand I again began craving carbs, being hungry between meals, eating more, etc.So to summarize, I've found that BRI's acetyl l-carnitine in combination with Nova Nutrition's alpha lipoic acid has a significant effect on my appetite, energy level, and cognitive clarity and probably enhances fat-burning as well. The effect is VERY pronounced, and I did not experience the same result with another brand.

A Real Working Supplement For More Energy
I started using Acetyl L-Carnitine about 2 months ago. I suffer from fibromyalgia, chronic depression and almost constant pain. I'm on Tylenol 3 and Gabapentin for pain but there's nothing the doctor will prescribe to combat the lethargy. After I started taking this supplement I began to have more energy...not a whole lot but enough to get a few things done each day. Considering that this is not a caffeine product it is very helpful for me in my current state. I take a handful of other supplements like vit. C, magnesium, fish oil and some others along with this, but Acetyl L-Carnitine is definitely the one I noticed making the most improvement. I just got a bottle of Zinc supplements to throw into the mix and will review that in a week or so after giving it time to kick in. I'm a pessimist at heart after the last 20 years of mental and physical illness, so to make the statement that something is actually working for me is a big deal. I can't vouch for anyone else, but I am very happy with this particular supplement and it will remain a constant part of my attempt to regain some small quality of living.
