What Will I Eat?: Quid Edam? (An I Am Reading Latin Book) (English and Latin Edition)

As a Latin teacher with 38 years of experience instructing youngsters of all ages, I was disappointed in this book. The author states it written for youngsters between the ages of 4 and 8 , so I purchased it to help a friend who is homeschooling her young children. However, I found that the illustrations are not at all appealing --scratchy black and white sketches drawn in a strange manner-- and the vocabulary is too complicated for children . The author makes some effort at humor, but the "jokes" are so poorly depicted that their effect would be lost on young ones. The concept of this booklet is good, but the execution is not age-appropriate .

My 5-year-old granddaughter didn't respond to this story well. I'm an old Latin teacher. She didn't show much interest yet.

This was a gift. My daughter in law teaches French,and wanted this for my grandchild. She loves it.

This book is a lot of fun to use in the classroom or to read at home with your kids. I teach middle school (grades 6-8) introductory Latin and we had a lot of fun playing "Odi et Amo (I like... / I don't like...)" with the food illustrations in this book to practice nominative vs. the accusative case. My class loved being read to and thoroughly enjoyed the enchanting pictures. This book could certainly be used at any age level, in school or at home.

I am teaching Latin for the first time this year, and found my students' interest piqued by this humorous book. The sixth grade students perked up with each page, knowing they could decipher the Latin either through English derivatives or whimsical drawings. I have read it to my own children with the same success. The best part is that there is a clear pronunciation guide and glossary at the end of the book, so novices can pick it up and plunge into Latin in a non-threatening way. I look forward to more works like this one.
