Love that I got 6TB of RAID1 storage. The web based UI is a bit clunky for my taste and I have yet to figure out how to set up the SSL security so I can access it from anywhere away from my home (manual is not full of examples unfortunately so there is a bit of googling to be done). After a week of running it I had a minor heart attack when the enclosure showed a red error light on the front after backing up about 10,000+ photos. Logging in however it just indicated that a notification was waiting. In this case it was that there was a firmware update available. Whew! It took me a few hours to get daily Email notifications (again took a lot of googling and trial and error on my part to get it to work with TSL) showing health status setup but now I feel less on edge and realize it was a good purchase. I would recommend the Buffalo NAS system to others.

The NAS just arrived a little bit ago. I found the quick setup guide to be very easy to follow mostly because all the steps are so simple. If you need more detailed instructions, the full manual is available for download. I'd say it took me about 5 minutes to hook it up to the network, turn it on, download the software, install it on my PC, and have it up and running. It took me about 10 more minutes to read about setting up folders and set up what I wanted. It was so simple I probably could have skipped the instructions. Then it took me about 15 minutes to set up the DLNA server, which I am completely new to, and have it running on my Roku TV with the Roku Media Player. So far it seems to be working flawlessly, ofcourse we will have to see if that lasts. Pros: 1) Extremely cheap when you consider it comes with two 2TB hard drives installed. 2) Super easy setup 3) Super easy and very simple web interface 4) Have it working on multiple computers and my DLNA Roku very quickly 5) EULA was super short and simple unlike some other NAS companies that I saw have EULAs requiring that you allow them the right to audit your use of the device, access your site, see your books, etc. Are you kidding me? 6) Has a USB connection for an external drive which I think will come in handy Cons 1) Maybe lacking in utilities compared to some other companies. I just wanted very basic functionality so I'm actually happy without all the extras. 2) Speeds copying data over the network to the drive so far have been about 17 MB/s for one computer and combined 24 MB/s when copying from two computers at once. I don't know how much of that is the device and how much is the other drives I'm copying from. But, it does seem a little on the slow side to me.

It works great so far. if setting up web sharing/access make sure you have an actual firewall between this device and the web. Also be sure to test user permission for sharing/access, im glad i did. *tangent* I use bitdefender box personally for it ease of use, unlimited licenses, and that its consumer product designed around consumer-friendly iot protection. But bitdefender box is limited in many ways. It doesn't natively support vlan beyond a basic guest network. The support information explicitly recommends having a router/switch behind it. I plan ondoing a whole network redesign at some point and putting in place an enterprise level firewall for my home as i plan on having a DC, AD, and private ip address. All that being said if you aren't diving into IT madness like I am planning to do I do recommend bitdefender box if not for the unlimited licenses alone (paid for annually). I bring this up in a review on a nas because my nas has had several attacks on it since i set up web access and all were blocked by my bitdefender box. For the average consumers, doing normal IOT stuff i do strongly recommend bit defender box. (or you can keep web access disabled.

(2 X 2Tb) If I had depended on the reviews, I probably would not have bought this. A friend had one and recommended it. I am using it for backup on my home network, which consists of PCs and Chromebooks. Some people gripe about the speed, which really doesn't matter to me because it backs up at night while I am sleeping. Having very little experience with networking, it took me a couple hours of fiddling with it (and my PCs) to get everything set up the way I wanted. This included setting up Paragon Backup software (free version). Just to experiment, I did set up a share folder with some videos and they play well over the network. The documentation is not very good, but you can find a YouTube video if you need help. It has only been installed for a few days, but so far I am very pleased.

I gave this a chance because the price was so much better than the Synology NAS since disks were included. I have been trying to get network-attached storage set up so that I can have a location for my Time Machine backups. What I do like about it: - Disks are included which theoretically make things easier (and cheaper) - It has two drive bays and RAID 1 is automatically enabled, which is probably what most people want. - It also has some utilities for working with RAID including RAID scanning. - It has clear instructions for how to turn it on/off without damaging the disks. - The box itself is stylish and not overly large Setup was a bit worse. The Quick Start guide is sort of like an IKEA instruction booklet - not the greatest but you can figure out what they want you to do. However the user interface was otherwise a little confusing, for example they have two separate iPhone apps in addition to the laptop app, the download page is a bit clunky, there aren't any downloads for recent Mac versions (you have to go with a several-year-old Mac version), etc. On the whole the software was not confidence-inspiring. But whatever, that didn't bother me too much - I just wanted to get Time Machine setup. As long as that works, I don't care about the rest. So I followed the instructions and it seemed like it was working. But then it just cut out and stopped. This happened several times. From Googling I got the idea to ping the NAS to see if it was connected, and sure enough, the problem seems to be that the NAS and the laptop can only connect intermittently. From the record of my pings, I can see that they are connected 5-10% of the time, and disconnected the rest. That's not a great ratio. The NAS is connected to my WiFi router by Ethernet. My laptop, WiFi router, and NAS are all in the same room. I purchased my WiFi router 2-3 years ago. During the time when my laptop cannot connect to the NAS, I can still browse web pages. That's particularly confusing because it means that there's no problem with my laptop's connection to the WiFi router, and the router and NAS are connected by Ethernet. I'm not sure what I'm missing. Unfortunately this seems to be a common problem with NAS routers, and I don't really know the solution. My old Apollo had a similar problem I think. However, I think that Buffalo should provide troubleshooting instructions for attempting to address these problems. If they can't fix this problem, I think they should just stop selling their product.

Changing my review to 5 stars. It's been chugging along like a champ. Took me a few hours to install Samba on my Linux box and figure it out, but once I did my Linux box mounts the drive just fine. I never write to it with Linux so I don't know how well that works. Original and first update below. I'm changing my review from 3 stars to one star. Original review below. My laptop drive is failing. So I'm doing a full backup. Which means copying a bunch of stuff to this NAS, just like I used to do to my Western Digital drive that supported Linux. And yeah, I do backups, but as my WD drive is both filling up and is throwing SMART errors I pointed the backup to the Buffalo drive. Guess what. The Buffalo drive is no longer on my network. Not only can I not copy stuff to it, it doesn't show up in my neighborhood, and I can't even ping it. It's effin dead after trying to copy some 30 hours and 70 gig to it. And yeah, it has plenty of space. So, considering you can't use this drive with Linux, and it craps out using it with Windows, I would say this is a 100% fail and would not recommend. Original review below. From Windows this thing works like a champ. but I wanted to use NFS to access the drive from my Plex media server. Turns out neither ssh nor NFS are available out of the box, and it's going to take some doing to make them work. I've been using Unix for 40 years, Linux for 25, and have written several Linux device drivers. So I suspect I'll be able to make it work. Your mileage may vary.

It is OK, it does what I was looking for, but I have two other stations running from Synology, so I have a broad spectrum opinion. I had asked a question earlier and no one answered, but I wanted to know what drives came with the unit. There are HDDs that are made for non-stop, enterprise level continuous access and service and have a MTBF much longer than an average hard drive for your PC. Western Digital is famous for their inexpensive line of Red Drives that are made just for this purpose. However, that's not what is in this system. It has two 5400 rpm WD Green drives (http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Green-Desktop-WD40EZRX/dp/B00EHBEUZO). The good news is the power down regularly and save energy. The bad news is you have a significant delay in spinning them up every time you access them. If you use this in a small business environment, you must be careful selecting the hibernation time because if people only access this every 20-30 minutes it will spin up and down all day and actually use more energy than if you just left it running. Once up to speed, it runs just like any other 5400 rpm drive. If you choose a RAID type other than 0 or 1 it will have a serious performance disadvantage. The web interface does not work with Internet Explorer 11, at least not perfectly, a lot of words are not readable. Than means Windows 8 and Windows 10 won't work well with it naturally. Windows 7 seems to work even with IE 11. Any mozilla browser works fine with it, so it's not like it's unusable. Instead of coming blank, it comes configured for RAID 1, but it is pretty easy to change out of the box if you have a little PC smarts. They have a good manual and online help - don't call to talk to a tech unless you are desperate. There are very few extras with it for serving up media, files, etc. However, the DLNA server seems to work fine, but it has no frills. My Synology 212j runs much faster and has many more options and apps, but it was also 30% more expensive. Hook this up with RAID 0 and you have a tad over 7TB of fairly fast performance and five licenses for PC backup software.

I bought this in NOV 2014 on a lightning round deal. It came w/ a pair of 2T Seagate 'Cuda drives. This was 1st & only NAS & used in RAID 1 for secondary storage & daily data backups of my weather station softwares, PHP scripts & website related stuff. 5 years later, 1 drive crashed & both were replaced w/ 2T 'Cuda drives. 1.5 years ago, they were replaced w/ 4T Ironwolfs because I was running out of room with the "second copy" stuff. The 2Ts replaced some older 1Ts in a desktop. As far as daily data backups go, I use Cobian backup. I didn't care for the supplied backup software. The NAS interface software is kind of clunky/basic but it works for simple usage. As far as the NAS itself, I've been happy with it other than it being a tad slow on large transfers. I've never had any dropouts, no disconnects from my AC1900 router/network - no unexpected problems of any kind but, then again, mine is from 2014.

Being not the greatest at networking and having experience in micro computer repairs I must say that this nas was pretty straight forward to configure and works straight out of the box. If I had to comment anything negative the software could use some improvements. I also use the NAS remotely with other users all having a private folder. This is a little bit confusing to setup then again probably my lack of knowledge. Buy this storage solution you won't be disappointed.

...la instalación se complica si no tienes lector de CD o puerto de Ethernet en tu computadora. Los dos parecen necesarios (conexión ethernet es definitivamente necesario). El servicio técnico a clientes por vía telefónica fue muy bueno y es verdaderamente de lo mejor que he conocido.

its not Buffalos fault, but getting a win 11 pc to connect tp a pc is not quite as simple as pnp. It does work with win 11 pro, but I have yet to get it to work with win 11 home. (I hesitate to alter the registry for obvious reasons)
