In electrical and mechanical trades and manufacturing, each half of a pair of mating connectors or fasteners is conventionally assigned the designation male or female. The "female" connector is generally a receptacle that receives and holds the "male" connector pin. However, a Reverse Polarity (RP) connector is exactly opposite. The threading on the "male" is on the inside, and the connector is a receptacle that receives the "female" connector which has the connector pin and the threading is on the outside. The term "reverse polarity" here refers only to the gender of the connector's contact pin, not in any way to the signal polarity. Because they were not readily available, RP connectors have been widely used by Wi-Fi equipment manufacturers to comply with specific local regulations, such as those from the FCC, which are designed to prevent consumers from connecting antennas which exhibit gain and therefore breach compliance. FME which stands for "For Mobile Equipment" is a miniature RF connector series offering excellent performance from DC to 2.0 GHz used primarily with RG-58 or equivalent coaxial cables in mobile applications and installations. SMA which stands for "SubMiniature version A" connectors are semi-precision coaxial RF connectors developed in the 1960s as a minimal connector interface for coaxial cable with a screw type coupling mechanism. It is designed for use from DC to 18 GHz.
