Great Tool Finds Bad Wires Fast
This wire tracer has saved me so much time troubleshooting bad cables. No more guessing which ethernet or coax line is the problem - just hook it up, follow the tone, and you've got your answer in seconds. The accuracy is spot-on for tracking wires through walls or bundles. Build quality is solid - the materials feel tough and well-made, not cheap plastic that'll break after a few uses.Super easy to use right out of the box. Works with RJ45, RJ11, and coax connections without any fuss. For the price, it's great value considering how much time it saves on cable work.Highly recommend if you work with wires regularly. Beats the old trial-and-error method by a mile.

Does the job with a couple of real-world caveats
It seems to do its job well, but some cons stand out for me. It came with weak/drained batteries that failed on me during first day of use. It would have been nice to have an extra switch of some sort on the tone generator wand that prevents it from accidentally turning on while itโs in my backpack (it turns on using the spinning volume dial). As others pointed out, it would be nice if the tone was louder on its max setting, as plugging in headphones/earbuds during real-world use is not always a realistic option when youโre squeezing through messy wiring racks and donโt need yet another cord to snag on something.

Worked great for organizing server closet.
Works perfectly. Tough to hate a on a tool that does exactly what you are expecting it to do. It traced each line accordingly and had no issues. I was able to organize a wildly messing server closet servicing a 12,500 sq foot office space. Very appreciative for what i was able to get done with this tool.

Worked ok - For 1 day
I bought this, to trace about 40 cables inside our office, that were installed by a sub-contractor that didn't bother to label anything. When an issue arose, nothing was marked, so it was difficult to trace the LAN cabling back to my network switch. So, I bought this set, and waited a few weeks, to ensure that we had enough time to broadcast to employees, that there would be no network available, this last weekend.Unit worked ok on the first day of use (Saturday, 11/15/25).However, on the second day of use, it would intermittently stop sending tone. I had to turn it off, turn it back on to re-establish a signal tone. After the third time of this happening, it would not turn back on. (I assumed the 'starter' batteries were dead, so I went and bought brand new AAA batteries.) Replaced the batteries, and now it won't turn on at all. I bought an 8 pack of batteries. Tried all 8 batteries in the unit, ensuring each time that polarity was correct. Still won't turn on.Tried to troubleshoot, using the Product Help option. It was no help. Appears it was written for a completely different item? My set, does not have a Power button, and the instructions tell me to 'press and hold the power button'... Usually Klein tools are worth the extra $$$ spent. However, this is not one of those times.

New home must have
I picked up the Klein Tools VDV500-705 Wire Tracer out of pure frustrationโand it ended up saving me a ton of time and guesswork. We recently moved into a house that was prewired for phone and data, which sounds greatโฆ until you realize none of the cables are labeled. I had a bundle of mystery wires in the utility panel and no clue which room any of them went to. Trial and error was not cutting it.Enter this tool.Setup was straightforward. I connected the transmitter to a line in the panel, grabbed the probe, and started checking wall jacks around the house. Within minutes, I was able to identify exactly which cable went to which roomโno more unplugging, guessing, or yelling across the house for someone to confirm. The tone signal is clear and easy to pick up, even when dealing with a bunch of wires in close proximity. The probe is sensitive enough to trace lines cleanly without being overly confusing or picking up everything at once. Once you get the hang of it, itโs actually pretty satisfying hearing that tone lock in on the right cable.Build quality feels like what youโd expect from Kleinโsolid and reliable, not a cheap throwaway tool. Itโs compact, easy to carry around, and simple enough that you donโt need to be a pro to use it effectively. If youโre dealing with unlabeled wiring, networking projects, or anything similar, this tool pays for itself almost immediately in time saved and headaches avoided.Bottom line: turned a confusing mess of wires into a clearly mapped system in one afternoon. I shouldโve bought this a lot sooner.

Good product with multipurpose
Good overall product, not great reach of the probe. Approx 5 cm from the cable when searching.
