So much can be said ...
This is a tale expertly told. Four books, in two volumes full of adventure, character development, and perfect pace. Donaldson's writing is exquisite. My vocabulary has been enhanced, which rarely happens. He created some thrilling, and some evil, characters. His imaginative fantasy elements were pure entertainment. And the whole mirror imagery was a great vehicle from which to base the action. My only disappointment, and it's major though subjective, is that I just couldn't like or admire the protagonist, Teresa. I grew weary of her weaknesses, her utter lack of self-value, her self-doubt, despite the ending, which was predictable. There were several other characters who were much more interesting. All in all, reading this series was time well spent.

A mixed review (again)
This is the second book of Mordant's Need. It is not a stand alone book. The thing that always brings me back to this story is the characters. You want greatness for them because they are not especially special. They are normal people surrounded by greatness and somehow, through mistakes and stumbles, they accomplish the greater good and discover they had greatness inside of them anyway. You definitely need to read the first book before you pick this one up. In places the writing is heavy handed an you get lots of details that you don't really need. However, this doesn't manage to detract from the good things going on in the book. I have read it numerous times over the last 22 years and the story has held up since the romantic days of high school to the more realistic views of a mature adult. I would not recommend this book to anyone younger than 15 because of mature themes and plot twists involving sexual abuses. I can definitely see this book becoming a classic over the next 25 years. The two books are definitely worth the time it takes to read them and resolve in satisfying way.

Donaldson's finest
In my opinion, A Man Rides Through the book it is a sequel to (The Mirror of her Dreams) are the most entertaining books by Donaldson. I first read them about a decade ago and just recently re-read them. This duo has it all: strong, likable characters who are vulnerable yet strong, a convincing, original fantasy world, a complicated but believable plot that kept me guessing, romance, psychological drama, horrible monsters, action, humor...everything! By contrast, Donaldson's Gap into Conflict series, which I've also read twice, has all of this but no light moments, just intensity, complexity, and more intensity. I'm only into the 2nd book of the original Thomas Covenant series, and although I love the fantasy world, Covenant is just so angsty. I don't understand why he can't realize that he isn't dreaming--since when do dreams make so much sense and follow a logical time-line? Still, I really appreciate the originality of Covenant's situation and stance (a leper who doesn't believe that the world he finds himself in is real but rather thinks it's a dream he's in while in a coma), and Donaldson is SUCH an elegant writer, I can't stop reading this series.

End of a classic fantasy series
I was so glad I had this already in my library when I finished The Mirror of Her Dreams. I started right in on it, no waiting a year for it to be published as I did when it was first published. Just as it did 30+ years ago, it drew me into its story. This book flew along as there was not the need to create the world and people as there was in the first book. Terisa and Geraden discover who they are and finally take action. While disaster seems to follow them from place to place, they are growing in confidence and resolve.Yes, I did follow Terisa's growth the most, but I also watched King Joyse and began to understand his path as Terisa and Geraden did. I found their insights fascinating.Who would like it? To begin with, this is not a standalone book; you must read The Mirror of Her Dreams first. But if you enjoy well-written fantasy, a touch of intrigue, and good people holding back the dark, then you would enjoy this series.

Read the first book, The Mirror of her Dreams first. It makes this one even better.
It is an adventure where mirrors are key to win the Mordant conflicts. The quest of the first book is continued as a new adventure of its own. Sacrifice, treachery, unexpected comrades, useful discoveries and questions answered. While my Avatar was adventuring through Mordant, I continually looked for "Which man will ride through what?" Guess which man gets which girl at the end, or is it which girl gets which man. It depends upon which Avatar you are playing.

Love 'em!
I don't usually review books even though I've been an avid reader all my life. I've found that I don't often agree with "best seller's lists" books so I've often wondered if my tastes might be a bit skewed from the "norm".I bought this book in hard cover way, way back when it came out. I actually bought the first book " Mirror of Her Dreams" in this 2 book series in hard cover, without realizing it was "to be continued" then had to wait 2 years before the second book was released. I've read this set several times. In fact I read them again just last week. I've enjoyed them every time. The story is, in my opinion, a well done blend of fantasy / sci-fi with action, political intrigue, a bit of horror / gore and some light romance. If your looking for a romance that has heavy love "scenes" - this isn't it.I was thrilled when they became available on Kindle. The hardcovers aren't lightweight, and my vision problems don't allow me to enjoy any of my favorite books in traditional print.

A deliberate and wonderful unfolding
Wow! So Mordant’s need really is one big, rumbling jigsaw puzzle of a tale that comes together seamlessly like the many pieces of a broken mirror. This second book slowly boils to a wonderfully satisfying conclusion that carefully doubles back and ties up loose ends. Definitely entertaining and worth the time.

Gripping story
Finishing this book was like losing a friend and I have read it before. This book and its partner Mirror of her dreams is a much easier read than the Thomas Covenent books. There are characters that everyone can identity with, if you like fantasy with a bit of violence and sex thrown in you will love it

My Son's best book ever - part 2
Excellent book, along with its first volume. I have owned since they were originally published in paperback, but ..... My Son has read them a number of times [they are his best book/story ever], my wife has read them and my daughter has nearly completed 'A Man Rides Through'. So my copies have become very dog-eared. Unfortunately this work is now out of print. Therefore I have had to purchase used copies. Both of these are clean copies, although they are are not mint, they are very suitable replacements for my old tattered ones.
