Winner winner, chicken dinner
Admit it, you’re reading this because 2020 sucks and you are warming up to the idea of prepping. Don’t worry, we know you don’t live in a bunker, you just want to have some emergency food on hand. It’s cool, no one is judging you. Mountain House chicken and rice is pretty much the gold standard of freeze dried food. Between this and their Chili Mac, you can’t go wrong. The flavor is good and the portions are about right for normal (seriously normal) servings. If you are new to freeze dried food, get a single serving a try it before buying a number 10 can of it. If you already know you like the flavor, carry on, get the big can. It’s much more affordable than buying the individual packages. The cans stack well and usually offer, realistically 8 servings per can. Count on 4 meals for 2 people per can. Just remember, this is freeze dried food. If you are used to large meals, this may be an adjustment for you. It’s also important to know how much sodium is in this stuff. It’s good for emergencies or for camping for a couple of days but it’s definitely not health food and the sodium content, not just salt but preservative sodium, is high. 730mg per cup (1 serving) for the chicken and rice. It is gluten free which is good, just make sure to read the labels and know your dietary needs when planning for emergencies. Overall Mountain House is good emergency food. Definitely better flavor than MREs and with a 25 year shelf life, it’s good to set a few cans aside for that unforeseen flood, snowstorm, global pandemic, whatever.

Delicious and Convenient Camping Meal!
I recently tried the Mountain House Rice & Chicken while camping, and it was a hit! The flavors were delicious and comforting after a long day of hiking. I appreciated how easy it was to prepare—just added hot water, and within minutes, I was enjoying a hearty meal without the hassle of cleanup. The rice was fluffy, and the chicken chunks were tender, making it feel like a home-cooked dish in the great outdoors. Plus, knowing it’s gluten-free and has a long shelf life gives me peace of mind for future trips or emergency storage. I’m definitely planning to stock up on more of these for my next adventure!

All your day's salt in one meal!
A big container of a good meal with solid chicken flavor, but when doing individual servings, use half the recommended water to start and add more as needed...unless you like chicken and rice soup! I had this in the summer and felt like it would be 7x better in the winter or when the evening temperature is below 60°F. The hot sodium mash had me sweatin'! The chunks of chicken were meaty and while definitely a bit spongy, were still satisfying out on the trail. The seasoning powder is wildly salty but that's to be expected with meals like this. I rationed out servings into 1-cup snack portioned bags the day before a long hike, and the food remained edible and surprisingly dry for an entire week, even with crazy amount of rain. Clean up is easy even with the oily sheen scattered with spices left in your eating vessel. A hot water bath and a wipe is all you need.

Fine camping cuisine!
Ah, the Mountain House Rice & Chicken. Scarfing down a bowl (or three) of this stuff after setting up an RV is just bliss. What a testament to human ingenuity! The fact that someone, somewhere, looked at one of those plump feathered mini-dinosaurs, a bag of rice, and a pile of carrots and said "Yep, I believe I can suck all the water out of all of that, stick it in a can, and eat it in 30 years"...well if I had the ability to think like that, I probably wouldn't have to spend all of my days arguing with a database. Arm yourself with a few cans of this caloric goodness to, you know, be prepared for the inevitable. Then just see if you have the will power not to eat it right away!

Preparing for the Future. I like the hearty flavor of this option.
I bought it for emergency use in the future. Freeze Dried Meals last 25+ years. The packaging was sturdy and undamaged. I have used this brand before and found it tasted pretty good.
