Disability awareness is key for our children. As a child I wasn't taught much at all about disabilities. Crude terminology was used, a lot of "don't stare" or "don't make fun of them" was tossed around, but I never had an understanding of what intellectual and physical disabilities meant, why were they in a separate classroom (this was many years ago, of course), why are we all scared to socialize, what is going on?? I work day in and out with children and adults with disabilities now and I wish I had read books like this treasure and had discussions, and LEARNED about disabilities and differences. I would have had such great friendships that I missed out on by being afraid to ask questions and not knowing about all of the ABILITIES each kid at my school had. I recommend you enrich your child's life by teaching them about their peers like Mimi.
