better books out there
OK. So I got taken on this book and I'll admit it. There's a two page introduction, 6 1/2 pages of plant based info and 6 1/2 pages with a total of 9 basic recipes in first grade print. The author must have been too embarrassed to have the page numbers printed, even on the table of contents. It was a cheap book but I had to laugh when I received it. Keep looking if you're serious about going plant based!

Do not waste your money on this item.
TL;DR: This item appears to be an attempt to quickly capitalize on the current trend toward plant-based eating, and doesn't demonstrate appropriate expertise in the subject matter or thoughtfulness in how it is presented. I regret that I did not read the pamphlet before the Amazon return window expired, or I would have immediately returned it.I have never written a product review before, but felt compelled to provide potential readers with a clear picture of what they'll receive if they order this item:1) I believe calling this item a "book" is an insult to books. At best, it is a pamphlet. It contains approximately 14 pages of narrative content and 9 recipes.2) Please note the author has referred to it as a "plant based diet." Do not confuse this with a Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) diet. The pamphlet includes animal products, added oils, and processed foods that would not normally be consumed in a traditional WFPB diet. If you are already following a WFPB diet, or know what that is, this pamphlet is probably not for you.3) To say the pamphlet is poorly written would be putting it charitably. This was not written by someone with competent writing skills, and it was not professionally edited. The misspellings, poor grammar, and inferior stylistic choices make it unpleasant to read. Possibly the most stunning issue is the complete absence of page numbers. The author couldn't even be bothered to omit references to the downloadable version in the introduction and conclusion, even though this is the printed (not downloaded) version. You will also get a good laugh at the author's attempt at "legalese" in the page on copyright infringement.4) The author does not appear to have expertise in nutrition generally, or in plant-based nutrition specifically. I follow a whole food plant-based diet and have formal training in plant-based nutrition. Some of the nutrition content in the pamphlet is inaccurate, to the point of being downright dangerous. For example, the author appears to be unfamiliar with the macronutrient content of nuts and seeds, and with the macronutrient needs of the human body. The author also uses the expression "healthy protein," without defining what the author thinks constitutes healthy protein or an unhealthy protein (and I shudder to think what the author's opinion is regarding the protein content of specific foods). The author implies the reader should not eat any fruit except berries, peaches, and pears. I'm not aware of any reason all whole fresh/frozen fruits can't be included in a plant-based diet. There may be a reason to limit dried fruits, but the author doesn't even mention dried fruit. The author claims all processed meats contain red meat. I'm not sure what basis the author has for believing deli turkey, for example, contains red meat. When the reader sees the expressions "healthy protein" and "healthy fats" being used, as opposed to just "protein" and "fat," this is a red flag that the content was not written by a nutrition expert. Whether plant-based or not plant-based, nutrition experts do not use those terms.5) The pamphlet is a collection of generalizations that, in my opinion, does not constitute a meaningful program for starting or maintaining a plant-based diet. A good illustration of this issue occurs where the author admonishes the reader to stop bad habits such as "eating out of a bowl," "not putting your fork down between bites," and "eating while traveling." I'm not aware of any reason a plant-based eater should not eat out of a bowl, or why putting the fork down between bites is a habit that needs developing. This is the nutritional equivalent of telling the reader that drinking a case of beer every day is completely healthy as long as you set the glass down between sips. Is the author seriously promoting the idea that readers should not eat while traveling? Probably not the best advice. I don't know of any health-promoting reason to starve while on vacation or while taking a 14-hour flight.6) The pamphlet makes many health/medical claims, some bordering on absurd, without any reference to independent published research to support those claims. Among the less serious health/medical claims made are that, after 30 days on a plant-based diet, you'll have shinier hair and stronger nails. I'm not aware of any medical research supporting that claim. It's difficult to imagine how a double-blind, placebo-controlled study could even be performed to test that hypothesis. The pamphlet also implies (and in some cases, outright states) that health benefits will happen quickly (within 30-40 days) when eating a plant-based diet. It is irresponsible to generalize this to the entire population of plant-based eaters. Even if it is true that some people may quickly reap health benefits by eating a plant based diet, others might not see significants changes for years, if at all. There are far too many variables involved to make that kind of claim (without citing supporting medical research), which indicates at least a somewhat reckless disregard for facts.7) I live a whole food plant based lifestyle and fully support plant-based eating. However, I feel this pamphlet is a disservice to plant-based eating and does not represent the best (or even an adequate) program or method for starting or maintaining a plant-based lifestyle. There are far better resources available to anyone who wishes to learn about and adopt a plant-based diet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------
