BMW 3 Series E36 Restoration Tips & Techniques: How to Restore E36 - 3 Series BMWs Built Between 1990 & 1999

I have owned 5 E36 model BMWs, including 2 M3s, a Z3, a 318ti, and a 325i, and have done all the work on them myself. I also built an E36 race car. I feel like know the cars inside and out, bolt by bolt, system by system, from routine maintenance to suspension overhauls, interior rejuvenation, engine and transmission repairs, and bodywork.Greg Hudock had a good concept for a book. I enjoy reading everything I can about E36sbut I found many technical and procedural errors as well as typographical errors that detracted from my enjoyment of this book, and could lead others to improperly work on their cars. For example, when he discussed changing the transmission and differential oil he stated the procedure was to remove the drain plug, replace it after the oil is drained, and then remove the fill plug. I, and many of my E36-owning friends, know that you always remove the fill plug first, in case it happens to be stuck, which happens often. Having an empty transmission or differential without having the ability to fill it creates a dilemma that could be avoided if the fill plug is removed first.When Hudock discussed driveshaft work, he neglected to say that when reinstalling the driveshaft the center support bearing carrier needs to be preloaded before tightening its two securing bolts. Not doing so will cause vibrations while driving.I realize it is not a service manual, but it does discuss technical and repair information. Some readers who are new to the E36 and new to car repair could be misled.

A great guide to everything past, present and (the likely) future of the BMW E36, making it invaluable to enthusiasts such as myself. I learned a great deal of things not even my hard core enthusiast knew for sure, turning me into an expert on the model practically overnight.Greg Hudock gives anyone wanting to get into the E36 scene a good, sensible, I-wish-knew-that-before-buying guide.I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the E36. Matched with the Bentley guide, you have everything you need!

This is not a service manual, instead, it is a fantastic guide to common repairs and upgrades. Great color pictures and easy to understand how-to chapters. This actually makes it a little better than a shop manual on the issues it covers. It is a must have for every 3 series enthusiast and a should have for any BMW fan's library. Just received my copy, and after an quick read-through, less than impressed. Although the writer expressed enthusiasm for the subject, the material is no more than what I have found at Bimmerworld.com or other helpful WEB site during the past year of ownership of a 328iS. Specs are listed, but do I need a repeat of what is found in a service manual? How to change the oil or tranny fluid? Really? Much of the other info is generic in substance. Glad I did not pay full price on this one!

Still a decent overall reference book if you own an E36. More of a companion book to more detailed shop manuals.

Nice book but not as in depth as I would have hoped from the name. For actually doing the jobs suggested a Haynes manual and some YouTube vids would be a good accompaniment. Nice to have if you have an BMW E36

I was expecting how to guides but while this book does have snippets of useful information it's not what I was hoping for.
