How to pair the remote with the base
If you are having problems with this unit, maybe this will help.First, make sure the battery in the remote is fresh. Mine was near dead when I got it. Its a CR2032 battery, which is commonly found in any hardware store for a few dollars. The LED on the remote should blink fast and bright when you push a button. If the LED is weak or does not light, replace the battery.Plug in the base unit and wait 20 seconds. Push the main green button on the top of the base unit. You should hear a click and one of the LEDs should light up. Push and HOLD the same button for about 3-5 seconds, you should see the LED on the base start blinking slowly. On the Remote, push the ON button and wait 2 seconds. Push the OFF button on the Remote, and you should see the LED on the base stop blinking. The remote should now be paired with the base.Slide the switches to the desired positions and press the desired timer option, you should see various LEDs light up on the base according to your selection.Note that the manual that comes with some of these units describes a different model (as mine did). The manual talked about channel settings, but there are no such switches on the remote (I opened it up to verify this).I found this reference to 'Command1 remote pairing', which has some useful information.http://www.improvementscatalog.com/wcsstore/images/Improvements/text/pdf/products/431195-Indoor-Wireless-Remote-System.pdf

I had to pair the remote and timer - then it worked!
I had the same problem as other reviewers - the remote would light up but doesn't seem to communicate with the timer unit. So... I found the instructions on the Westinghouse website. Once I followed the instructions to pair the remote and timer, it worked fine. Here's the link to the instructions:http://www.thenccusa.com/pdf/pguide/26119.pdf1. Locate the power [ON/OFF] button on the receiver.2. Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds. The LED power indicator will begin to flash slowly.3. On your transmitter, press [ON] wait 2 seconds and then press [OFF]. The LED indicator will now stop flashing.4. You have successfully paired the transmitter to your receiver.

Cheaply made
Purchased this at Target, looking for the receipt now to return it. Like everyone else, the remote did not work for me at first. Took about 15 minutes for it to finally transmit directions. Afterwards I was was really happy with the product........until we had a storm hit. The wind literally snapped the stake at the point where it was inserted into the ground. I had no idea that plastic could get that cheap and weak, but apparently Westinghouse proved me wrong.Do yourself a favor and look for something more reliable and durable.

Timer works once, then doesn't turn off automatically after that
Thankfully my remote was paired out of the box, and on the first day, it shut off after 6 hours like I wanted. That's where the fun ends. It will turn on approximately the same time every day after that, but it won't turn off automatically anymore. I have to use the remote to turn it off.

Great while it lasted.
This was amazing for about the first 3 days. Everything seemed to work like a charm but I never really used the features except the 6-8hr timer. After the first couple days the remote started acting up.. by the 5th day the remote no longer worked. Wellt he remote works, as in the transmit button flashes but it does not connect with the outlet.

Absolute junk!
My headline says it all. I bought this particular product at Target to use for my Christmas decorations. Right off the bat, the remote did not work. After trying several things I needed to reset the ground stake, and then re-pair the remote. Finally the remote started to work. The next problem was the timer did not work. I would set the timer to come on at dusk to go off in six hours. The next morning just before the sun comes up guess what? The lights are still on! I tried unplugging and replugging, un-paring and re-pairing, nothing seems to work with this piece of crap. I have since returned it to Target.Needless to say I found one on Amazon with good reviews and purchased it. The only difference is that it does not have the remote. But if the timer works correctly that's all I need. Save yourself some time, money, and aggravation! Do not purchase this product! This is the outlet that I replaced the Westinghouse with. No problems thus far. Yard Master 13547 6-Outlet Power Stake with Light Sensor and 6-Foot Cord

Terrible. Never seems to "remember" the timing setting--stays on ...
Terrible. Never seems to "remember" the timing setting--stays on all night no matter what. Remote battery lasted no time. No timer control at the switch itself--just an on/off, so remote not being reliable makes it worthless.

VERY disappointed in this product
VERY disappointed in this product. Set it up, everything worked fine. Then, not 2 days later the remote stopped working - you can only turn the lights on at the stake. As another commenter indicated, the red light on the remote lights up indicating that the remote works (and just in case I did change the battery as well) but the remote doesn't seem to connect to the unit any longer. Absolutely NOT worth the money.
