Excellent Weights to go with the 2 Gallon Crock!
I purchased these weights to go with the Two Gallon Crock for making Sauerkraut in my kitchen. The weights and the crock are perfect! There is no better sauerkraut than that you can make at home with finely shredded cabbage and salt. It is easy and delicious! The benefit for your gut is amazing!

Perfect
I bought these weights to fit into an old number 3 Red Wing crock. It is a tall version. This is my first attempt at making sauerkraut. I was skeptical that the cabbage would make enough juice to completely cover the shredded cabbage. When I put the salted shreds into the crock, the juice was at the same level as the cabbage. I used a kraut pounder to squeeze it down and the juice was about an inch above the cabbage. When I added the weights, the juice rose to 2” above the cabbage. There is about a half inch gap between the side of the crock and the weights. A few of the smaller pieces of cabbage floated to the top of the juice, but I removed them with a slotted spoon. I think this is going to work.

Great crock!!
This larger size is better than smaller, for me. Don't have to limit amount of vegetables I'm fermenting. A substantial crock that lives up to its reputation. Not a lightweight, which can be good or bad, depending on how strong you are to place it into and out of a storage area between fermentations. I'd buy it again.

Broken
Can’t tell you if it’s a good weight or not. It arrived with a big chunk missing, chipped off the side. Interestingly the broken off piece is not in the box so it was not damaged in transit. Amazon’s suggested fix was to call the manufacturer, which I did. I got their voice mail and did not have an option to select that equated to reporting a damaged product. Since this was shipped by Amazon, I’m not sure it’s an issue for Ohio Stoneware. Whomever packed the item for Amazon put a defective weight in the box. I will return it and will have to figure out how I’m moving forward with five heads of cabbage I had planned to use for a crock of sauerkraut!

It does what it is supposed to, but it only completes half of the steps necessary for a good ferment.
I am new to fermenting and bought several different apparatuses (apparatii?) to do mainly sauerkraut and kimchi. I bought this in conjuction with another Ohio Stoneware product, the 2 gallon crock. It does what it is supposed to, but you definitely need to cut some cabbage leaves (or use a glass/ceramic plate of some sort) to hold down the ferment under the brine. It feels very porous, which also makes it difficult to clean, so I am not sure how it will hold up over time. I am sure there is something you can buy to help out, but there is another step to making these effective. I think a solid glass weight would be better, but that defeats the "stoneware" appeal I guess (I just care about the simplicity and effectiveness). I think I will use this for big batches, but mainly focus on small batch ferments. I did make a pretty good batch of sauerkraut with this though. I later transferred it to mason jars out of fear of the fear of fruit flies that were hanging around the crock.
